Shield 5

Creating self-prescribed limitations can oftentimes lead to some of the most creative solutions. That’s exactly what the team behind Shield 5, an up and coming crime drama, is hoping for.

Rather than creating and sharing the seven-minute short film on Vimeo or YouTube, as has been the trend for the past few ears, the 28 episode film will be shared on Instagram, 15 seconds at a time, starting on February 1st.

The lead man behind the film is Anthony Wilcox, a director/producer who has worked on multiple feature films in the past, including Pearl Harbour, Hot Fuzz, A Mighty Heart and Layer Cake.

According to the Wilcox, the reason for choosing Instagram is to create a ‘social cinema’ experience where users across the globe can watch, comment and share bits and pieces of the film one episode at a time.

In speaking to BBC Newsbeat, Wilcox said, ‘The way people are watching things is evolving and changing all the time so it seems like the right time to try something different.’

As far as limitations, Wilcox continued on in the interview stating, ‘I was excited by the limitations Instagram has, which is that videos are 15 seconds […] Weirdly it never felt limiting, it actually felt liberating.’

As for how the film will unfold on the Facebook-owned social media network, Wilcox said still photographs will be shared in-between the 15 second episodes to further help guide the audience through the engaging experience.

Instagram is continually looking for new and interactive ways to get users more engaged with the platform. Projects like Shield 5 could be just one of many solutions.

Watching a movie on an iPhone might not make for typical theatrical experience, but for an ever-evolving society always looking for different ways to consume entertainment, this methodology could prove to be a successful one.

You can head on over and follow the Shield 5 Instagram profile to prepare yourself for the February 1st opener.

What are your thoughts? Would it be too hard to follow a 7-miute film, 15 seconds at a time?
