Canon will release up to seven new RF lenses in 2019

After the rather disappointing reception received by the EOS R, Canon seems to be doubling down on mirrorless to show off how seriously they’re taking it. So far we’re expecting two new EOS R mirrorless bodies in 2019 (one entry-level and one “super-high resolution“) as well as three new APS-C DSLRs, and two EOS M bodies.
That’s a heck of a target for a single year. But this isn’t all they’re doing. The RF mount lens selection for the EOS R and its expected siblings is a little on the thin side at the moment. According to Canon Rumours, they’re going to announce up to seven new RF mount lenses during in 2019. They do say, though, that some may not actually hit the streets until 2020.
- RF 16-35mm f/2.8L (or similar)
- RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS (or similar)
- RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS (or similar)
- RF 105mm f/1.4L
- RF 85mm f/1.8 IS STM
- RF Macro lens
- RF non-L kit lens
The last one there makes a lot of sense, as one of the two new EOS R bodies expected this year (yes, it’s 2019 now) is an entry-level body. How it will stack up against the higher-end EOS M series, we’ll have to wait and see.
Canon Rumors cites a source as telling them that there is also a wide-angle prime lens in the works, too, although it’s not currently part of the 2019 roadmap. So, it might be a prototype we never get to see, or it could be something we’ll see after 2020.
They also say that over the next 30-36 months, Canon is expecting to release at least 15 RF mount lenses.
