7Artisans 10 f/2.8 II Fisheye Lens

Fisheye lenses were once a very popular type of lens. Used for everything from epic ’90s skateboarding videos to photographing sports stadiums. These days, though, they seem to be quite rare. Nikon doesn’t have one, Sony doesn’t have one, and Canon’s only fisheye lenses today are in VR lenses.

So, we have to rely on third parties for now. And here’s 7Artisans with their new one. It’s the 7Artisans 10 f/2.8 II Fisheye Lens (buy here), the manual focus Mark 2 version of a lens they released a couple of years ago.

7Artisans 10mm f/2.8 II Fisheye Lens – E, L, Z & RF Mount

As demonstrated in the above review from travel photographer Andrei Dima, the new 7Artisans 10mm f/2.8 II Fisheye Lens is a manual focus lens. But with a fisheye lens, once you focus more than a couple of feet away from the lens the whole world’s in focus anyway.

In the interest of fairness, there is one camera manufacturer that makes full-frame fisheye lens for current model cameras. That’s Sigma, with the Sigma 15mm f/1.4 Fisheye DG DN Art series lens ($1,999). It’s available for both Sony E and Leica L mounts, and it even offers autofocus.

But at $1,999, the Sigma is a little too rich for many wallets. And if you shoot Nikon Z or Canon RF, it’s not even an option. The new 7Artisans fisheye comes in at only $278, which is significantly less expensive. Of course, you lose the somewhat unnecessary autofocus, and there will likely be a difference in image quality. But if you’re looking at <$300 alternatives to a $2,000 lens, you’re probably ok with that.

The new 7Artisans lens offers a minimum focus distance of only 15cm (6″), and beyond 2 metres, the entire universe is in focus. It offers a huge 185° field of view with a wide f/2.8 aperture across your full-frame sensor. This makes it ideal for things like astrophotography.

Focus ring distances, as well as the aperture and depth of field markings, are all printed in fluorescent ink, allowing you to easily see your settings at night with minimal light. And while it’s fairly heavy at 602g (1.53lb), it is a compact lens,
