The Natural History Museum in London has unveiled the extraordinary Highly Commended images of the 60th Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. Among the captivating photos are a “dancing” stoat, a moonlight hunter, and even a David Bowie-inspired spider (no, it’s not from Mars). A record-breaking 59,228 entries were submitted from 117 countries, showcasing the incredible diversity and beauty of the natural world.
The competition has attracted photographers of all ages and experience levels, and the finalists represent a wide range of subjects, from intimate animal interactions to stunning landscapes.
To mark the 60th anniversary, a new Impact Award has been introduced to recognize conservation success and positive change. The competition received a record number of submissions, demonstrating the growing interest in wildlife photography. The finalists showcase a wide range of animals and habitats, from the depths of the ocean to the highest mountain peaks.
Kathy Moran, Chair of the judging panel, commented:
“In this selection you see species diversity, a range of behavior and conservation issues. These images represent the evolution of the competition through the years, from pure natural history to photography that fully embraces representation of the natural world – the beauty and the challenges.”
“As we celebrate sixty years of Wildlife Photographer of the Year, we also celebrate the generations of visitors who have been inspired by the beauty and majesty of its images, and the millions of connections made with nature,” added Dr Doug Gurr, Director of the Museum.
The 60th Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition is supported by Associate Donor The William Brake Foundation. The winners of each category, including the prestigious Grand Title and Young Grand Title awards, will be announced on October 8, 2024. The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition will open to the public on October 11, 2024, and will feature 100 photographs from around the world. The exhibition will also tour the UK and internationally, inspiring millions to appreciate and conserve the natural world.
