If you like fisheye lenses, here’s a real treat. C-4 Precision Optics 4.9mm f/3.5 Hyper Fisheye pretty much reveals in its name what it’s capable of. The “hyper fisheye” lens offers a 270° field of view, or in other words- it can see behind itself. But this impressive feature comes with a price – and the price is $39,000.
LensRentals introduced the prototype of the lens around this time last year. It’s interesting that we’ve seen these guys tear down all sorts of gear, but this time they put something together from scratch. And it’s a pretty awesome thing they made! LensRentals founder, Roger Cicala, shared some details about assembling this insane lens, in case you’re interested to learn more.
And while the C-4 Precision Optics 4.9mm f/3.5 was only a prototype back then, now you can actually buy one. It’s made for Sony E-mount cameras, and it’s pretty heavy, weighing about 12 lbs together with the built-in tripod legs and cheese plate. Of course, it’s a specialized lens and it’s not made for our everyday Instagram snaps. It’s not even made for photoshoots most of us normally do. It was built with VR creators in mind, and it’s ideal for immersive VR content, 3D imagery, horizon to horizon skyline images and so on.
As I mentioned, the lens can be all yours for $39,000 and each piece is custom-built. But there’s also a cheaper option of renting it for $1,246 per week.
