When Google Pixel 3 was announced, many people were surprised to learn that it only features one rear camera and a dual front camera. The phone relies heavily on AI to help you take the best photos, and the latest update is aimed particularly at selfie-takers. Thanks to Google’s AI, the Pixel 3 can now tell when you’re making different facial expressions and snap a photo automatically when it thinks it’s the best moment.
The latest feature comes as an update to the front camera’s Photobooth mode. From now on, your Pixel 3 can identify when you are smiling, kissing someone (or just making a duck face), sticking your tongue out, puffing your cheeks, or looking surprised.
Here’s how it works. When you open the Photobooth mode and press the shutter, Google’s AI will do a “quality assessment” of your selfie. You’ll see a white bar as a visual indicator telling you how the AI rates your pic. The rating depends on whether you and/or your friends have your eyes open or closed, and if you are making any of the registered expressions. When the white bar reaches a high score, the shutter will be triggered automatically, capturing what the AI chooses as your best selfie.
The feature works both for individual and group shots. So hopefully, you won’t get any more requests from angry friends asking you to remove a group selfie from Facebook because they look terrible. While this may not be too useful for photographers, it could simply be a fun feature to have on your phone. I personally don’t take a lot of selfies, but I imagine this new feature will make many millennials happy.
