It’s December again, which means lots of us are sitting there wondering what to buy for ourselves or the photographer in our lives this holiday season. We’ve been saving up all year to get that something special, but we don’t want to deal with in-store queues – or maybe we’ve just slacked on our Christmas shopping this year. We want to stay at home where it’s nice and warm and see what we can find online that gets delivered straight to our door!

So, this means it’s time for the 2022 DIYP Holiday Gift Guides. It’s Day 4 today, so we’re going to be going through the list of our favourite new tripods, sliders and gimbals that have been released during 2022. Keep visiting back this week as we release our other guides, including cameras, lenses, lighting, accessories and gadgets.

The future of photography and the definitive answer to pineapple on pizza: Manfrotto tells all

The world is officially divided into two types of people: those who like pineapple on pizza, and those who are vehemently against it. Like the Valencians who sent death threats to the chef Jamie Oliver for putting chorizo in his paella, surely an Italian brand like Manfrotto would not support pineapple on pizza? In the interests of culinary world peace, DIYP spoke to Manfrotto’s parent company Videndum Media Solutions to find out, along with other more photography-related things.

You may not be familiar with the name Videndum, but for sure you know the brands Manfrotto, Lowepro, Joby, Gitzo and Savage Paper. Videndum Media Solutions is the name behind all of these ‘household’ photography names, and more. In fact, you could completely kit out a photography or video studio using products that are only produced by the Videndum umbrella. That is actually the company’s over-arching philosophy, explains Videndum’s Chief Marketing Officer Chris Carr. He tells DIYP about how Videndum has positioned itself to help content creators at every step along the journey.

Speed is always important. We are a culture obsessed with it. From optimising efficiency to having a faster workflow, it matters. Particularly when it comes to client work. How can we get from A to B more quickly? Well, that’s where redesigns of equipment can come in very useful. When companies throw out the traditional ways of making the workhorses of the gear we use, everybody wins.

Sachtler Creative Director Alex Krause spoke to DIYP and gave us his ideas about how his company helps creatives speed up their workflow when shooting video.

A few weeks back we did a very stupid thing, we dunked a Sachtler Flowtech 75 in the dead sea.  Legs, head and all. Now, Dunking a tripod in saltwater is not clever, but dunking one in the most corrosive waters in the world is just plain stupid. Surprisingly, it performed beautifully after the dip. That’s easy though. If you wanna see how it works two months after, hit the jump. + We are giving one of these beauties away, continue reading to see how you can win one.

Best Video Tripod for Filmmakers! – Sachtler Flowtech 75

To understand my view on the Sachtler Flowtech 75 (B&H | Amazon) I need to share a story. I remember one time I walked into my rental house, and I came to pick up my Sony FS7. It was outfitted with all the bells and whistles that one would need for a production. I called the rental house owner and asked him the last minute if it’s ok to add a tripod. He told me, “sure, no problem! Take the Sachtler 20”. I asked the worker to get me one and asked him how much extra it was going to be and he said: “Nothing”. Later we chatted and I asked him how could it be that you give a $6,000 camera with a tripod that costs more than $11,000? That’s double what the camera costs! His answer stuck with me for years to come.

“A good tripod keeps everything on top of it safe, it’s cheaper for me to rent the tripod for free and have no broken cameras returned than to save some pennies on the tripod and fix a camera every few rentals.”
