ProGrade announces fast and tiny PGM0.5 UHS-II SD/microSD card reader for mobile workflows

ProGrade Digital has announced a new memory card reader and this one’s designed for mobile creators to let them quickly copy and shift files two and from their Android and other portable Type-C USB devices. It supports UHS-II microSD and SD cards on the USB 3.2 Gen 1 protocol (which is way more than UHS-II SD cards need), letting you transfer to and from laptops and mobile devices at maximum speed.

ProGrade says that the new ProGrade PGM0.5 reader is in response to the “new wave of content creators [that] has emerged over the last couple of years”, primarily targeting platforms like TikTok and YouTube with many creators working in a mobile environment that doesn’t always afford the luxuries of weight and space that a home desktop solution demands. The PGM0.5 is their way to help support these more mobile creators.

ProGrade Digital competes directly against Sony with new 800MB/sec CFexpress Type A cards

ProGrade Digital has announced its new CFexpress Type A cards. At the moment, this means that their only real competitor is Sony and their target market is Sony shooters. The new cards offer read speeds of up to 800MB/sec, with sustained and burst write speeds of 400MB/sec and up to 700MB/sec respectively for high-resolution video capture.

ProGrade Digital’s new UHS-II microSD cards come with faster speeds and a much lower price

There aren’t many companies out there making UHS-II microSD cards, as there are virtually no cameras out there that can fully support them yet (still). One of the companies that does make them, though, is ProGrade Digital. They launched their initial V60 UHS-II microSD cards back in September 2018 with read and write speeds of up to 200MB/sec and 80MB/sec respectively.

Now, ProGrade has launched new V60 UHS-II microSD cards with increased read and write speeds of 250MB/sec and 130MB/sec respectively. As well as speeding up the cards, a new higher capacity 256GB version will be available. Oh, and they’ve cut the prices virtually in half.

Nikon launches their XQD cards in the USA – Just as everybody else releases CFexpress

Nikon announced their XQD cards back in August 2018, but they’re now finally in the USA, just in time to become obsoleted by the wave of CFexpress cards being released by everybody else. It only seems to be available in 64GB capacity, and not the 120GB previously reported, but they are showing as available right now to pre-order from B&H for $129.95.

The release comes just at a time when SanDisk, Delkin, ProGrade, Wise and Lexar have just released their CFexpress cards for order (in the case of SanDisk) or pre-order (everybody else), offering 3-4x the speeds of Nikon’s (or anybody else’s) XQD cards.

Update: ProGrade did not accidentally leak an unannounced Fuji camera, they say it was just a typo

CFexpress is coming. Of that, there is no doubt. It’s the drop-in replacement for XQD and will also replace many of the CFast 2.0 slots on the next generation of cameras. ProGrade Digital was the first to announce support for the new format, back in April last year, but they’ve been holding off on releasing it until hardware comes out that actually supports it.

ProGrade Digital CFexpress cards are coming with speeds up to a crazy 1.6GB/sec

ProGrade Digital has officially announced the launch of their new CFexpress cards. But the range has expanded since they teased us with the 1TB CFexpress card last year at NAB. It’s also gotten a bit of a speed boost, too! Along with a new CFexpress card reader, two lines of CFexpress cards are coming in Gold and Cobalt flavours offering read speeds of up to 1.6GB/sec and write speeds up to 1.4GB/sec.

ProGrade Digital doubles down with 1.25GB/sec dual UHS-II SD card reader

ProGrade Digital is rounding out their card reader lineup quite nicely to appeal to as many different types of user as possible. They’re now up to four card readers, covering CFast+UHS-II SD, CompactFlash+UHS-II SD, dual UHS-II microSD cards and now dual UHS-II SD cards. The new card reader is priced at $79.99, same as the other three, and is available now.

ProGrade Digital targets drones and 360 cameras with new super fast UHS-II microSD cards

ProGrade Digital certainly seems to have settled into the swing of things nicely since their launch earlier in the year. Initially starting up with a range of CFast 2.0 UHS-II V60 SD cards, and a dual format card reader, they quickly expanded out into UHS-II V90 SD and the next major high-end format; CFexpress.

Now, they’re going small, announcing three new V60 UHS-II microSD cards. With users demanding higher quality footage from their drones, action cameras & 360 cameras, it’s a logical path to pursue. They’ve also announced two new USB 3.1 Gen 2 card readers, too. One contains SD and CompactFlash slots while the other takes a pair of microSD cards.

How to fix the Sony A6300 overheating issue

For a long while now, we’ve been using the Sony a6300 as a second camera/frugal 4k camera. The quality is superb and really, we could not be happier. Well, that’s a lie, we could be happier if the darn thing did not overheat after 15 minutes of use. OK, skipping to another story: Over the last few weeks, we’ve moved from our old fleet of Sandisk Extreme Pro cards to Prograde V60 cards.

We noticed that after the move to the UHS-II cards, the a6300 is no longer overheating. At least in out controlled studio environment. For testing, we turned the AC off (as you can probably tell) and plugged the a6300 into a Tethered Tools case relay to get uninterrupted power. The SanDisk Extreme pro lasted about 15 minutes, while the Prograde lasted the entire 30 minutes.

Now, here is the interesting thing, the Prograde V60 are USH-II cards. (you’ll see that the cards have more contacts). Once we moved to those cards, the camera stopped overheating and we can reach the “imposed” 30 minutes recording that the camera provides, effectively doubling the recording time we get from it.
