Sony A7S IV Rumor Gets New Life With Mystery Camera Registration

Sony may have accidentally given camera fans something to talk about before announcing anything at all. A newly registered Sony camera in China has sparked fresh speculation about the long awaited A7S IV, although the registration itself does not reveal which model is coming.
The registration, first reported by Sony Alpha Rumors, identifies the camera as WW261362 and lists WiFi 6 support. Sony Japan is named as the applicant, details that Sony Alpha Rumors associates with its higher end cameras.
For now, there is no official confirmation that WW261362 is the A7S IV.

Why the A7S IV is back in the conversation
Sony Alpha Rumors believes the registration could belong to the A7S IV, partly because of the camera’s apparent positioning and Sony Japan connection. The site also points out that other possible candidates include successors to the A9 III, A7C II, A7C R, and A1 II.
Some of those possibilities appear less likely based on Sony’s current product cycle. Sony announced the A9 III in November 2023 and the A1 II in November 2024, while the A7C II and A7C R arrived in August 2023.
The A7S series is particularly interesting because Sony itself has previously declined to confirm a successor. During a CP+ 2026 interview, Sony said the A7S line continued to have stable sales and that it was monitoring customer feedback, but did not disclose specific plans for a new model.
What could the Sony A7S IV bring?
The specifications circulating with this latest rumor are still unconfirmed. Sony Alpha Rumors speculates that an A7S IV could use the same 16MP stacked sensor as the FX5, along with a 9.44 million dot electronic viewfinder and the processor, autofocus, and image stabilization technology found in the latest A7R VI.
The rumored camera would also reportedly lack the FX5’s internal RAW recording options.
That would position the hypothetical A7S IV differently from Sony’s Cinema Line. An Alpha body with an integrated EVF and still photography capabilities could appeal to hybrid shooters who want the video features associated with the A7S series without moving to a dedicated cinema camera.
For now, though, these remain predictions rather than confirmed specifications.

Sony has plenty of camera rumors in the pipeline
The new registration arrives after a busy year for Sony cameras. Sony Alpha Rumors has previously tracked registrations that were linked to the FX5 and RX10 V, while the site has also been watching for another full frame Alpha model.
Earlier reports have floated several possibilities, including an A7S IV, a new A7C model, an A6900 and successors to Sony’s Cinema Line cameras. Some of those rumors have involved conflicting sensor and processor information, making the registration itself more useful as evidence that a new camera exists than as proof of its specifications.
For now, WW261362 is just a code, but if Sony is indeed preparing an A7S IV, this may be the first concrete clue that the four year old A7S III is finally getting a successor.
