Polaroid has announced Polaroid Mod, a new instant camera with four shooting modes on a physical dial: Split Shot, Motion Freeze, Double Exposure, and Light Painting. It’s aimed at people who want to experiment with light, movement, and layering without needing deep technical knowledge. All of this sounds really fun, giving you more creative freedom with instant photography. Let’s dive right in.

The Creative Options

So, what do these do? Split Shot divides the frame into two halves using a physical accessory. Motion Freeze records movement and fires the flash at the end of the exposure, trailing action into a frozen moment. Double Exposure layers two scenes onto one frame. And Light Painting holds the shutter open to capture light trails from a sparkler or any moving light source.

Having all four on a dial rather than buried in a menu is the smart part. You can see them, reach them without thinking, and use them on a whim without fiddling with settings. That’s fun and practical, especially for non-photographers who aren’t used to diving into settings.

It’s worth noting, however, that not all of these features are exclusive to the Polaroid Mod. You’ll find double exposure on other Polaroid cameras, as well as instant cameras from other brands like Fujifilm and Lomography. Light painting is doable on the Instax Mini 99 and the Lomography lineup, too, via the bulb mode.

Still, Motion Freeze as a dedicated rear-curtain mode is less common, though the Instax Mini 90’s Party Mode does something similar. Split Shot is the one you won’t find elsewhere at this price. What sets the Mod apart isn’t any single feature, but having all four accessible in one place.

The obvious buyer is someone already into film photography who wants more expressive tools without going fully manual. It’s also a great gift option for those who want to dive into instant photography, as well as those who are already into it.

I also have to notice that Polaroid’s anti-AI sentiment is still strong, and I love the humorous take with the “Spend the day creating shots that would take A.I. one minute.” Sure, gen-AI does it faster, but where’s the creativity and enjoyment (and a tad of frustration) there? I’d choose analog photography over gen-AI any day!
