Optical design leak shows Canon’s RF 50mm f/1.8 isn’t just a rehoused EF lens

More information about Canon’s upcoming RF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens has started to leak, including its optical design. Once again, this comes from Nokishita, and it shows that it’s not simply a rehoused EF 50mm f/1.8 STM, but is in fact a new, more refined design, specifically for the RF mount lens.

When you look at the two lens designs side-by-side, they are quite similar, but they are most certainly different designs.

It will be interesting to see how the image quality compares between the two. 50mm f/1.8 lenses aren’t exactly part of Canon’s top-tier lineup, but they’re also not completely terrible, either. For the RF mount, though, Canon seems to have put the emphasis on quality and sharpness (even in the slightly less expensive ones), so I am curious to see how images from the two stand up against each other once it becomes official and starts getting into peoples hands.

With photos and optical configurations starting to leak, an official announcement must be getting very close now. We’ll keep you posted as we hear more!
