Sony has added its first true macro lens to the G Master lineup. The newly announced Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 Macro GM isn’t just about sharpness or bokeh, though it certainly brings plenty of both. What makes it stand out is its unusually high 1.4x maximum magnification, sophisticated stabilization tech, and an impressive level of control built right into the lens barrel.

Advanced Macro Capabilities

While most macro lenses top out at 1:1 magnification, Sony’s new macro goes further. With a 1.4:1 reproduction ratio and a minimum focusing distance of just 10.2 inches, this lens is made for serious close-up work. And unlike some macro designs, it doesn’t punish you with a razor-thin working distance. You still get a usable 3.5-inch gap between your subject and the front element at full magnification, which should help when lighting tiny scenes.

This lens also supports Sony’s 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. That’s how you get up to 2.8x magnification for those who like to shoot even the most reluctant insects or the tiniest bits of texture.

Despite being the first of its kind in the GM line, Sony hasn’t held back. The 100mm f/2.8 Macro GM features a 17-element, 13-group optical design that includes two XA (extreme aspherical) and two ED (extra-low dispersion) elements. Combined with Nano AR Coating II, this should translate into images with high contrast and minimal flare, even in tricky lighting.

Internal focusing and a floating element design help maintain optical performance across the focusing range, and the 11-blade circular aperture promises smooth, pleasing bokeh to help isolate your subjects.

Autofocus and Stabilization

Macro work often requires precision, and that extends to the autofocus system. Sony has packed this lens with four XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors, delivering autofocus that’s 1.9x faster than the older FE 90mm f/2.8 G OSS. It’s fully compatible with the a9 III’s 120 fps bursts and 4K 120p video, so it’s not just for stills.

Optical SteadyShot is also built in and specifically optimized for macro shooting. Combine that with a body that has sensor-shift stabilization, and you get coordinated control for even better shake compensation.

Ergonomics and Physical Controls

Sony clearly expects this lens to be used for more than just macro. It includes a physical aperture ring with a de-click option for video, two focus hold buttons, a full-time DMF switch, and a focus limiter that lets you lock in your focus range. The focus ring itself is pull-to-switch between manual and AF, and printed scales show both focus distance and magnification. The lens is dust- and moisture-resistant, with a fluorine coating on the front element to keep grime at bay.

Teleconverter

Using Sony’s 1.4x and 2x teleconverters doesn’t just extend focal length. It also lets you get more working distance at higher magnifications. This matters when your subject is alive and jumpy, or when you’re trying to sneak a light into the scene without casting shadows. With the 2x TC, you get up to 2.8x magnification at a 200mm focal length.
