We know Lomography for its weird and beautiful films and film cameras (this one’s my favorite). They’ve just announced Lomourette Half-Frame Camera, another delightful throwback to the golden age of film. Its ability to capture 72 half-frame images on a single roll of 35 mm film makes it a practical choice for every film photographer – especially us on the budget, I’d say. So, let’s dive in and see what it has to offer.

The Lomourette gives you more opportunities to experiment and create diptychs. While this format might be limiting for those who prefer full-frame richness, the savings on film costs and the chance to explore unconventional framing make it an appealing option for enthusiasts.

With a fixed focal length of 24 mm and limited aperture settings (f/8 and f/11), the Lomourette is as straightforward as analog cameras come. The two shutter speeds, 1/60 and bulb mode, offer basic control, but don’t expect versatility akin to modern film cameras. There’s no ISO adjustment or tripod mount, which keeps things simple but may frustrate those seeking more precision.

On the plus side, you get a Diana F+ style flash and colorful gel filters in the package, so that expands your creative opportunities. Although, in a completely different way than more control over exposure would.

While half-frame cameras are a rarity these days, the Lomourette isn’t the only one. We’ve had TYCH from Alfie Cameras, as well as Ilford’s disposable half-frame camera. Still, it’s good to have a choice, no matter how niche this type of camera is.

The Lomourette isn’t for everyone. Apparently, you won’t choose it for paid, high-end shoots or for high-quality fine art photography. Its appeal lies in its simplicity, nostalgia, and the creative opportunities the half-frame format affords. Beginners might appreciate its forgiving nature, and seasoned analog photographers might find it a refreshing break from more technical setups. It’s available for €69 (around 73$) in its basic version and beautiful mint green “Picnic edition“. There’s also a “Water Lilies” version priced at €79.
