Lionel Messi has scored yet another record-breaking achievement, this time on Instagram. The Argentine soccer superstar recently posted a set of photos featuring himself, his team, and the 2022 Qatar World Cup trophy on the social media platform. And it probably comes as no surprise – it is now officially the most-liked post in Instagram history. Even more than the egg.

At the time of writing this, Messi’s post has amassed a staggering 69.1 million likes and counting. This beats the previous record holder, a random egg, which got an Instagram profile only as a social experiment (and if I might add, a successful one).  It currently has “only” 57.8 million likes.

Is anyone surprised by this course of events though? After all, Messi’s impeccable soccer skills and remarkable career got him a massive social media following, with 406 million followers on Instagram alone. After all, the whole world was watching the Argentina-France finale wondering if Messi would complete his stellar CV… And when he did, lots of people celebrated with him. Nearly 70 million of them, at least on Instagram.
