Lexar ARMOR SD Cards: Built Like Tanks, but Are They Fast Enough?

Lexar is taking durability seriously with its latest ARMOR GOLD and SILVER UHS-II SDXC cards. Offering storage capacities of up to 1TB, these new cards ditch the usual plastic design in favour of stainless steel, promising 37 times the strength of traditional SD cards.

Both the GOLD and SILVER series are built to endure just about anything. With an IP68 rating, they’re protected against dust, debris, and water, making them ideal for adventure photographers or filmmakers who find themselves in rugged environments.

Lexar also boasts they can withstand impacts from 5 meters, extreme temperatures (-25°C to 85°C), and exposure to X-rays, UV, and magnetic fields. To be fair, though, pretty much all SD cards from all brands are immune to X-rays, UV and magnetic fields. In short, though, these cards are ready for battle.

Unlike standard SD cards, the ARMOR series removes fragile features like the plastic write-protect switch and delicate rear ribs. Instead, Lexar has laser-engraved its branding and specs directly onto the steel casing—so you won’t need to worry about peeling labels after prolonged use.

Side note: Thank you for removing that write-protect switch! Why this wasn’t done years ago across the board, I’ve no idea. I’m sure there are people out there who have used this “feature”, but I’ve never met any of them.

However, durability isn’t everything, and performance might leave some users wanting more. The ARMOR GOLD series offers read speeds of up to 280MB/s and write speeds maxing out at 210MB/s, while the SILVER models trail behind with write speeds up to 160MB/s. Both cards carry a V60 rating, making them suitable for 4K video but falling short for demanding 8K or high-bitrate workflows.

Price and Availability

Pricing details are limited, but the 256GB ARMOR GOLD card is listed at $114.99, and the 128GB version at $54.99. The ARMOR SILVER cards don’t seem to be available at all yet.

While they aren’t the fastest SD cards on the market, the combination of rugged construction and reliable video speed could make them a smart investment for outdoor content creators or anyone prone to equipment mishaps.
