Legendary American photographer Joel Meyerowitz has received the 2026 Outstanding Contribution to Photography award from the Sony World Photography Awards. The honor celebrates his six-decade career and lasting impact on the world of photography.
To mark the occasion, a special exhibition of Meyerowitz’s work will open at Somerset House in London. The exhibition is set to run from April 17 to May 4, 2026. It will showcase some of his most iconic images, including street scenes from New York, quiet coastal moments in Cape Cod, and his heartbreaking documentation of Ground Zero after 9/11. The exhibition will also feature new video and audio pieces to give you a peek into his process and the stories behind the photos.
Meyerowitz will receive the award at the Sony World Photography Awards ceremony on April 16, 2026.

A Life Behind the Lens
Born in New York City in 1938, Meyerowitz started out in advertising. But, he had a change of heart after seeing photographer Robert Frank at work. Inspired, he picked up a camera, hit the streets, and never looked back. He became one of the first photographers to fully embrace color photography and helped elevate it to an art form.
Over the years, Meyerowitz has captured everything from the energy of city streets to the quiet beauty of everyday life. His camera has followed him through Europe and across American landscapes. He documented one of the most difficult chapters in recent history – the aftermath of 9/11. Meyerowitz was, in fact, one of the few photographers with full access to Ground Zero.
“I am honoured to be selected as this year’s Outstanding Contribution to Photography recipient,” Meyerowitz says about receiving the award.
“The photographs I have made over the years show the world as I see it, and the moments of beauty, humour and fun that can be found everywhere, if we take the opportunity to look. I hope this exhibition will encourage visitors to look again at their surroundings and engage with all of the life that unfolds around them.”

An Inside Look at Joel Meyerowitz‘s Work
The Somerset House exhibition will include never-before-seen installations made with filmmaker Chris Ryan. These pieces dive into Meyerowitz’s memories and techniques, letting visitors experience how he saw and captured the world.

Alongside these will be selections from his early New York street photography, his color-filled “field photographs,” and his deeply personal Cape Cod series. Whether capturing a busy sidewalk or a calm shoreline, Meyerowitz has a gift for finding something meaningful in ordinary scenes.
A Well-Deserved Spot Among the Greats
Meyerowitz has exhibited in over 350 museums and galleries worldwide and published 57 books. He’s a two-time Guggenheim Fellow and has earned awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and The Royal Photographic Society.
He now joins a list of past Outstanding Contribution to Photography recipients that includes Mary Ellen Mark, Martin Parr, Graciela Iturbide, Edward Burtynsky, Sebastião Salgado, and Susan Meiselas.
For those wanting to hear directly from Meyerowitz himself, a special talk will take place at Somerset House on April 21, 2026. Combined tickets for the exhibition and talk will be available in limited numbers, so hurry up if you want to get yours. You’ll find updates and more information on the Sony World Photography Awards website.
