Last week, it was revealed InstaAgent, a third party Instagram app, was stealing users credentials and using them to post unauthorized photos to accounts.
In what can only be considered a direct result of this news, Instagram has announced a massive change in policies that will dramatically impact third party apps by limiting how much developers are able to do with its API.
In the post, Instagram says the changes in its policy will ‘improve people’s control over their content and set up a more sustainable environment built around authentic experiences on the platform.’
While the specifics of what will and won’t be available aren’t yet released, what is known is that third party apps will no longer have access to users’ feeds and ‘Popular’ posts.
Effective immediately, Instagram has closed its application process for determining what developers do and don’t get access to the private API.
On December 3rd, applications will open back up for both new and old apps, with developers getting until June 1st, 2016 to follow the rules of the new API or get booted from the program.
