If you’ve ever wondered which of the US states is home to the most photographers, your question has now been answered. Stock photo website 123RF recently conducted a study revealing that it’s Hawaii. While it may sound surprising, this state has the most photographers per 100,000 people, which makes it the US state with the most photographers per capita.

123RF analyzed the data from the U.S. Census Bureau. According to the data, Hawaii has 1,759 photography businesses or 123.87 services per 100,000 people. There is a total of 1759 photography businesses: 139 employer establishments and 1,620 independent businesses. The second on the list is Montana with 110.39 photographers per 100,000 people and a total of 1,172 photography businesses.

“This study offers an interesting insight into where photography is most prominent in the country. Hawaii unsurprisingly takes the crown,” said a spokesperson for 123RF. “Hawaiian photographers are often spoiled for choice with the state’s beautiful landscapes and scenery.”

Some may find the results surprising considering that there are more populous states in the US than Hawaii. However, it’s important to remember that this is the number of photographers per 100,000 people. More precisely, it’s the number of photography businesses. The study doesn’t account for hobbyists, and it’s quite possible that the numbers would be different if it did.

“With an estimated 38,420 professional photographers across the country, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, many different factors can attract photographers to certain states and cities,” the 123RF spokesperson said. “Finding a location with the right mix of culture, job opportunities, income, and subject matter can be challenging, but some states can evidently offer more to photographers than others.”
