It appears Sigma’s not the only one with a 50mm f/1.4 announcement this month. In fact, they’re not even the only ones announcing one for Sony E mount cameras. It looks like Sony’s getting ready to announce one, too. It’s the new Sony 50mm f/1.4 GM and the latest rumours suggest it’s coming on February 21st.
Despite an announcement being a little over a week away, though, a photo of the new lens has leaked. Of course, it has. They always do these days. There aren’t many specs about the new lens yet, although there are a few, and there are some new ones we can see from the image itself.
According to Sony Alpha Rumors, based on leaked specs from a German retailer, the list at the moment is quite small:
- It has an 11-blade aperture
- It’s weather sealed
- There is no built-in optical stabilisation
- It will cost around €1,850 (about €450 less than the 50mm f/1.2 GM)
From the photo, we can also see that:
- It takes 67mm screw-on filters
- It has a minimum focus distance of 41cm (1.35ft)
Other than that, there’s not really much else out there yet. But, if the announcement day rumours are correct, we’ll find out all of the rest next Tuesday. Well, we’ll find out on Tuesday assuming the leakers stay quiet. Otherwise, we’ll find out sooner.
Either way, it’s an interesting-looking lens, even if it is more than twice the price of Sigma’s new 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art series lens.
