Canon’s Latest Camera Price Increase Hits Hard: Is Now the Time to Buy

Were you going to purchase a new Canon camera? Hold on to your hat. Canon’s latest camera price increase just went official in the U.S., and it is not a small jump. Most cameras and lenses are now pricier, and it appears tariffs are the culprit. Sigma, Nikon, and Tamron were already in the line.
Retailers may still carry some merchandise at the previous prices, but that won’t be for long. If you were expecting a summer discount, this will be the opposite.
The largest leap? The Canon EOS R3. This camera jumped from $3999 to a staggering $5399. That is an increase of $1400. Even the refurbished version has jumped to $4859. Many thought the R3 would come down in price by the end of the year. Instead, it leaped into luxury in the blink of an eye.
Canon’s latest camera price increase is not solely about the R3. The new EOS R1 costs $500 more now. The EOS R5 Mark II has returned to its initial price point of $4299. That one is easier to swallow, but still, it adds up. Currently, some sellers on Amazon appear to be holding out at the former prices, but nobody knows how long that will continue.
Another Major Blow Might be on Its Way for Canon Lovers
Canon is not offering much information on the why. Common sense is that tariff adjustments are the reason. The current U.S. tariff on Japan is roughly 10%, but there are rumors it will increase to 24%. That might or might not occur, depending on trade talks currently being negotiated.
There is also the potential that supply chains that include Chinese parts are involved here as well. All of these camera components originate from various countries. Attempting to disentangle the complete rationale for the new prices? Best left to the professionals.
There is a little bit of uncertainty, as well, about how this would affect future camera releases. The fall season is typically ripe with major announcements. But if Canon is attempting to make pricing adjustments now, might that put the brakes on new releases? Folks have price expectations. A $3000 EOS R6 Mark III would likely cause many to raise an eyebrow, and not in a positive way.
Canon is also introducing a Trade-in Trade-Up program in early July. Perhaps that will mitigate the pinch somewhat, depending on how freely it is offered. But for now, the prices are what they are.
I understand that companies have to contend with tariffs, shipping, and international costs. But as a long-time observer of the Canon space, Canon’s latest camera price increase hits kind of hard to the everyman buyer. That EOS R3 was such a great camera at $3999. At $5399, it becomes suddenly unattainable for many.
I really hope this is just short-term and not the new normal. If you are looking to buy a new camera, this could be a good time to search for older inventory before it is gone.

Now is the time to seriously evaluate if you really need to purchase new gear. If not, don’t buy anything, or buy used.
