Canon teams up with Adobe to add native Frame.io integration to Canon cameras

Canon has announced that native Frame.io integration is coming to select models of Canon cameras. They’ve been collaborating with Adobe to make this happen. Don’t get too excited just yet, though. The feature is only coming to the recently announced Canon Cinema EOS C80 and EOS C400 cameras for now.

It’s not surprising that Canon is focusing on these cameras first, as they’re more likely to end up in the hands of people who need this kind of functionality the soonest. But hopefully, it will be coming to the EOS mirrorless range in the future.

Canon EOS Native Frame.io integration

Frame.io has become a hot topic ever since it was bought out by Adobe in 2021. It’s easy to see why. Frame.io’s Camera to Cloud technology adds a lot of convenience. It provides a simple workflow for teams working from home or in different parts of the world.

The new update is initially being released for just two cameras. Those cameras are the Canon EOS C80 and the Canon EOS C400. The new update supports proxy file transmission through Frame.io. The filenames, timecode and metadata are identical to the high quality files recorded straight to the camera’s memory card.

The proxy files, while obviously not quite as good as the main recordings, allow editors to get in there and start working on things while clips are still being shot. And because everything about the file is identical to the high quality version, it’s easy to swap them out when those larger source file transfers are completed later on.

Price and Availability

While the announcement for the new firmware comes today, the actual updates won’t be coming until “Winter 2024”. Now, technically Winter doesn’t start until December 21st. That’s a pretty narrow window with 10 days of 2024 left after winter starts. So, it wouldn’t surprise me if it came a little earlier than that or even early into 2025.
