Canon just patented a 40-800mm lens. Isn’t this just incredible. In old point and shoot terms the box would have been marked X20. You have to admit it’s impressive. I mean, the only thing that comes close to that is my old 14-400 modem. Oh, it is full frame too.
It’s not that there were not huge zooms ranges before, Nikon made the excellent (for its price) 18-200 lens, and sigma has the ultra telephoto 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 (a.k.a bigma).
There is not much information about the patent on egami who first shared it, but here is a quick taste of the focal lengths and their corresponding f-stops and angles of view:
Focal length 41.09 92.80 152.20 225.00 797.99
F-number 4.67 4.66 4.65 4.67 5.71
Angle of view 27.79 13.13 8.10 5.50 1.55
Will this lens ever get made? I doubt it. I am not sure that there is a market for it (though you are welcomed to find use cases in the comments)
