Canon Asia has “pre-announced” that there is to be an upcoming v1.2.0 firmware for the Canon EOS R mirrorless camera. I’m not sure what a “pre-announcement” is. An announcement to say there’ll be an announcement? Isn’t that still just an announcement?
Anyhoo (yes, it’s a word), there’s a new firmware coming. And it’s coming at some point around the middle of April. It offers improved Eye-Detection Autofocus supporting Servo AF when shooting still images and provides fixes for several EOS R bugs.

Enhancements:
- Eye-detection AF
– Supports Servo AF when shooting still images.
– Now available when shooting movies regardless of “Movie Servo AF” setting.- Small AF Frame Size
– Supports Servo AF when shooting still images.
– Now available when shooting movies regardless of “Movie Servo AF” setting.Fixes:
- Under certain conditions the electronic level displayed in the electronic viewfinder did not display properly.
- Under certain conditions information displayed in the electronic viewfinder was not properly rotated.

The Canon Asia website says that the firmware should be coming at some point during the middle of April, so we’ll keep you updated as soon as we hear more.

Remember when boys gave their high school girlfriends promise rings? Skip the middle step.
Could it perhaps also add IBIS as a crazy surprise? Or bump that raw burst rate up to 3fps from 2.2fps? Or do something about the soft MFT-sized video crop?
The very least they could do would be to add a second card slot… especially if this is a “major firmware update.” Come on Canon! Add IBIS and a second slot to my EOS R and I promise I’ll stop complaining. I won’t even care about the video you don’t want me to shoot anymore. Plus, it’s probably like five lines of code, max…
