Nikon apologises for pre-order delays due to being sold out of the new D850

Well, it looks like the Nikon D850 is a big hit, if the pre-order is anything to go by. Nikon have actually sold out of all of their pre-order stock, and have issued a notice apologising for expected shipping delays.

I suppose it’s not really much of a surprise that demand for the D850 is somewhat overwhelming. Once the final specs were made public, and the first reviews out, there were a lot of happy people out there. And I heard talk from more than a few people talking about jumping ship from their current brand to switch back to Nikon.

The story of The Invisible Man has fascinated people for more than a century. It’s been a common inspiration for movies, TV shows, and even photographs over the years. Getting the effect in-camera, though, is often extremely tricky, if not impossible to do. So, we have to resort to Photoshop.

I’ve seen a number of techniques on the Invisible Man thing for Photoshop over the years. But this one from Phlearn has, by far, the most amount of thought put into it of any I’ve seen before. Aaron Nace covers the entire process from planning and shooting the images to compositing and editing them in post to create the final piece.

Making the decision to go full frame is an easy one for some people. Full frame cameras offer a shallower depth of field for a given aperture & field of view combination. They also tend to be the cameras with the best high ISO performance. But most people don’t have an unlimited budget. So, what’s the best full frame DSLR under $2,000?

That’s what Jay P Morgan wanted to figure out when he put the venerable Canon 5D Mark III up against the Sony A7II and the shiny new Canon 6D Mark II. Rather than just bleat on about specs, this video is a look at how the cameras compare in the real world, and how each affects the final result. Note that the 5DIII is technically over $2K, but they can be found used for much less.

It’s a dream for many kids to be their favourite super hero. Or to at least have their super abilities. Photographer Josh Rossi, however, believes that some already do. Along with his wife Roxana, and designer, Julie Whiteley, he set about finding them to photograph them. And find them they did. To use Josh’s words, these kids “have been through hell and back and have real superhuman strength”.

After turning his 3 year old daughter into Wonder Woman last halloween, Josh decided that an epic super hero photo shoot was the way to go. His subjects were a group of children that live with some form of disability. The goal was to show off their inner strength in a way that would inspire others struggling with similar issues.

Notting Hill Carnival visitors will be stopped from taking selfies at Grenfell Tower

It’s been over 2 months now since the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower in North Kensington, London, causing the deaths of at least 80 people. Shortly afterwards, to the dismay of local residents, it became something of a tourist attraction. Attracting selfie shooters from afar. Visitors were then asked to refrain from this disrespectful practise.

This weekend is the Notting Hill Carnival, one of the highlights of London’s annual calendar. It attracts around one million people each year, making it one of the world’s largest street festivals. The carnival runs through Kensington, and visitors are again being asked not to shoot selfies with the tower. Only this time, the requests are being backed up by the Metropolitan Police.

Liquids are a great source of photographic fun. It’s a topic which fascinates many photographers. There’s so much to experiment and play with. Splashes are particularly intriguing to me a a photographer, because you never really know exactly what you’re going to get. You might fire of 50 or 100 shots before you get the one you want.

That’s where this video from photographer Dustin Dolby steps in to save you a little frustration. With minimal kit, and a little compositing, you can often create fantastic end results much more quickly.

Nikon’s new D850 DSLR features an entirely Nikon designed sensor

One of the biggest pieces of D850 speculation floating around the Internet the last few days seems to be about the sensor. Specifically, who makes it. And no, it’s not Sony. Nikon have actually designed their own sensor for the D850, according to a Q&A session with Imaging Resource. Nikon also promise some pretty significant performance improvements.

This isn’t the first time Nikon have developed their own sensor. Although, many of their past cameras have used Sony and a few Toshiba sensors. But it a Nikon designed sensor is a first for the D8x0 line. The D800 and D810 both contain a 36MP Sony made sensor suspected to be the same one as that in the original Sony A7R.

State Supreme Court rules digital cameras can’t be searched without a warrant

This is a somewhat limited bit not insignificant ruling. Techdirt reports that the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts has “sort of” decided that the Supreme Court’s Riley decision isn’t just for phones. It covers digital cameras, too.

In the case in question, a robbery suspect’s backpack was searched. In it, amongst other things, they found a camera. The police searched it without a warrant and discovered a photograph of the suspect next to what was later to be a stolen gun. This led to two convictions. One for stolen property and the other for carrying a firearm without a license.

The idea of streaming liveview from your phone to your camera is not a new one. I’ve been doing it over USB and WiFi now with my Nikon DSLRs to qDslrDashboard for a while now. Other solutions, such as the TetherTools Case Relay. But, both of these systems are quite limited. You have to have one of a set list of specific cameras, for a start.

This device, called LukiLink, though, actually gives your phone HDMI capture abilities. So, you can use it with any camera that has an HDMI output. You can use it to monitor, record, and even live stream your DSLR, mirrorless or other camera’s output. The product is currently about a third funded on Kickstarter with 23 days to go. But if it can deliver on its promise, it looks fantastic.

Crashplan ditches consumers, kills off “for Home” cloud backup service

I love the irony of their tagline. “Protect yourself from the inevitable”, which in this case is the closing down of their “for Home” service. This was a service for consumers, hobbyist photographers and the like to store their data online in the cloud. This way, when the inevitable happens, and they lose it locally, they still have a copy safe and sound floating around the Internet.

Now, users will have to find a new home for their data. Starting yesterday, CrashPlan are no longer renewing or accepting new subscriptions for their “for Home” service. They are honouring current subscriptions, but when they’re over, your data’s gone. So, you’ll want to find a new service and back up to there as quickly as you can.
