Laowa 24mm f/2 Zero-D Tilt-Shift

Venus Optics has announced the Laowa 24mm f/2 Zero-D Tilt-Shift, a manual focus lens designed primarily for architectural and cityscape photographers. The company is positioning it as the fastest tilt-shift lens ever made, and with a wide-angle focal length that’s actually suited to the genre, it makes a strong case on paper.

The headline numbers are +/-10 degrees of tilt and +/-12mm of shift, paired with a 108.8-degree field of view. That’s a generous range of movement for a lens this size. As with the other Laowa lenses, “Zero-D” stands for “zero distortion” aka minimal optical distortion without relying on automatic in-camera correction.

The f/2 maximum aperture is what sets this apart from most of the tilt-shift competition. Architectural interiors and twilight cityscapes can be a nuisance to capture in low light. Having that extra stop or two over a more typical f/3.5 or f/4 tilt-shift gives you more flexibility to shoot handheld or lower the ISO. The tilt function also opens the door to landscape and creative work, whether that means maximizing depth of field across a wide scene or pulling off the miniature effect with an artificially shallow plane of focus.

The optical formula includes five Extra-low Dispersion elements, two glass aspherical elements, and four Ultra-high Refraction elements. As with virtually all tilt-shift lenses, autofocus isn’t part of the package. It’s available in Canon RF, Nikon Z, Sony E, and L-mount for full-frame mirrorless, and notably extends full tilt-shift functionality to medium format shooters via Fujifilm GFX and Hasselblad XCD mounts. One caveat worth noting: the L-mount version is not compatible with the Panasonic Lumix S5II, S5IIX, S1MII, S1MIIE, and S1RII bodies.
