Tamron 12-20mm f/2.8

Tamron has officially announced the 12-20mm f/2.8 Di III VXD, a full-frame ultrawide zoom for Sony E and Nikon Z mount cameras. Positioned as a premium workhorse for landscape, architecture, interior, and astrophotography shooters, it pairs a constant f/2.8 aperture with a compact form factor. It’s also the debut lens for Tamron’s new Toned Profile Next mechanical design language. There’s a lot going on here, so let’s dig in.

At 12mm, you’re working with a 121°58′ angle of view. On a full-frame body, it’s wide enough to cram entire rooms, dramatic skies, or the Milky Way in a single frame. Stretching to 20mm gives you something a little tighter and more controlled for architecture or street work, where you want context without the exaggerated distortion of a fisheye extreme.

This lens contains 17 elements in 12 groups, built to address the usual ultrawide headaches: distortion, chromatic aberration, and sagittal coma flare. The last one is particularly important for astrophotographers chasing clean stars in the corners. The 12-blade rounded diaphragm is a nice touch too, producing smooth bokeh at close focus distances and clean starburst effects when stopped down at night. The minimum focus distance of 0.18m at the wide end opens up some creative close-focus possibilities that most ultrawides simply don’t offer.

Autofocus is handled by Tamron’s VXD linear motor, which has earned a solid reputation for speed and silence across their recent lineup. That’s especially important for video shooters, but I’d also say it’s a plus if you’re shooting stills in a quiet environment like theater. The mechanical zoom lock, click-on/off aperture ring, and USB-C port for Tamron Lens Utility software round out the control scheme.

The 570g body is compact for what it’s offering, and the moisture-resistant build with fluorine front coating makes it a reasonable choice for outdoor and travel shooters who don’t want to babysit their gear. Speaking of travel, the integrated flower-shaped lens hood and rear sheet-filter holder are practical additions that save you from hunting for third-party accessories on day one.
