Hollywood Color Meets Still Photography: DaVinci Resolve 21 is Here

Gearing up for NAB 2026, Blackmagic Design has just pulled the curtain back on DaVinci Resolve 21, and it’s safe to say the line between “cinematographer” and “photographer” hasn’t just been blurred—it’s been professionally erased. While Resolve has long been the gold standard for Hollywood color grading and post-production, version 21 introduces a monumental shift: the dedicated Photo page. Here’s what photographers can expect in the latest version of DaVinci Resolve.
DaVinci Resolve Introduces the Photo Page
For the first time, photographers can step away from traditional layer-based editing and embrace the power of node-based grading. If you’ve ever felt limited by standard sliders, this is your wake-up call. The Photo page brings the full DaVinci color toolset—curves, qualifiers, power windows, and the node editor—directly to still images.
Additionally, DaVinci Resolve 21 will allow you to tether your camera for direct, live image capture (currently limited to Sony and Canon cameras), non-destructive reframing that allows for crops while maintaining the original source resolution without degradation, an at-a-glance “Lightbox View” with all your changes applied in real-time, and Cloud Collaboration to sync and share your photo albums with view and/or edit permissions via Blackmagic Cloud.
A Suite of AI “Magic” Tools

Blackmagic has doubled down on the DaVinci Neural Engine, introducing AI features that feel like they’re from a sci-fi movie. Whether you’re fixing a mistake or enhancing a performance, these tools are designed to do the heavy lifting. AI CineFocus allows you to “rack focus” after the shot was taken. Simply select your focal point and adjust aperture for realistic bokeh. Resolve 21 also adds AI Face Age Transformer, a tool that allows you to de-age an actor’s face with a few adjustments of a slider. AI UltraSharpen & Motion Deblur can be used to rescue unusable footage by upscaling low-res clips or removing streaks from fast-motion shots. Lastly, IntelliSearch can help you find your subject with simple text prompts instead of “scrubbing” through your timeline. Search for “person in a red hat” or specific dialogue, and let the AI find the clip for you.
Major updates to Fusion and Fairlight; Improved Efficiencies Across the Board
The update isn’t just about the new Photo page; the existing rooms got some major upgrades, too. Fusion now includes the Krokodove toolset, bringing over 70 new motion graphic tools to the table. For those working in the 3D space, the update to USD SDK 25.11 and support for foveated rendering in Apple Immersive workflows means Resolve is ready for the next generation of headset-based content.

Fairlight users will celebrate the addition of Folder Tracks. If you’ve ever been overwhelmed by 100+ audio tracks, you can now group them into folders to keep your timeline clean. Plus, the Fairlight Animator allows your audio levels to actually drive your Fusion animations—perfect for making character lips or eyes react dynamically to sound.
Beyond Fairlight and Fusion improvements, there are several “quality of life” features have been added to speed up the delivery process. From the ability to simultaneously generate HDR and SDR output files from a single timeline to IntelliScript that allows Resolve to sync a Final Draft or text screenplay to transcribed audio. All designed to move your project from concept to delivered on time and under budget.
