These cute farm animal portraits are the comic relief we all need

I’m a sucker for farm animals, and one of my dreams is to own a little farmhouse and keep goats, donkeys, cows, horses and other animals as pets. And seeing them in Randal Ford‘s portraits made this dream even stronger! In his latest project, Farm Life, Randal takes you on a unique journey to meet farm animals like never before. In Randal’s stunning portraits, these animals are cute, quirky, and almost human-like, and you can see their beauty and character in each and every image.
Known for his studio photography of pets and wildlife, Randal’s lens has already captivated audiences with previous photo books like Good Dog and Animal Kingdom. He has now comprised his farm animal photos in the book titled Farm Life.
Taking the photos
So, how do you take a cow or a horse inside a studio? Well, you don’t. Randal traveled across the U.S. with a mobile studio, setting up on-location in barns to capture the essence of each animal. By recreating a high-end studio aesthetic amidst the hay and feed, Randal turns these animals into expressive subjects, as if each one were posing for a high-profile magazine cover.
But taking portraits of farm animals comes with challenges as varied as the animals themselves. Each shoot required patience, flexibility, and a little bit of chaos. Hens and roosters, for example, proved particularly unpredictable; they’d hop and flutter, forcing Randal to capture them in quick bursts before they moved out of frame. Yet, the unpredictable nature of his models contributed to the genuine feel of each image. “Animals don’t act or pretend,” Randal shares, “and that’s where their beauty lies.”
As a result of the meticulous shooting process and tons of patience, each image in Farm Life tells its own story. With just a caption accompanying each photo, Randal allows the animals’ personalities to take center stage. His captions offer a gentle nod to their lives, creating windows into each animal’s world and inviting readers to consider the rich, often complex personalities of these creatures.

“The eyes of these animals are always a significant focus in my work—they serve as a window into the unspoken parts of each creature and build connection,” Randal says. “I believe that we not only see each animal in a new light but also discover a reflection of ourselves within them—our souls, our emotions, and our shared experiences.”
“Animals continue to be an incredible presence in our lives, and I believe that is because of this mirror effect. As we witness their majesty and strength, we are able to notice the same things within ourselves. It is this overarching thesis that makes the images in this book meaningful to me, and hopefully to you as well. As we look upon each portrait, may we recognize not only the outer beauty of these creatures but also the inner courage, vitality, and force that have carried them across the land for millennia.”

More than just a book
Beyond just the visual pleasure and the joy these photos bring, Farm Life has a mission: a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Dell Children’s Foundation, extending the book’s purpose to supporting essential pediatric care. In this way, Randal’s work doesn’t just celebrate animals but contributes to a meaningful cause, bridging the human and animal experience.
Ultimately, Randal hopes these images remind readers of our deep connection with the natural world. “Through their eyes, we see not only their soul but also a reflection of the ancient wild within them,” he says.
“Whether clothes to keep us warm, strength and speed to keep us able, or life-giving food on our tables, farm animals deserve more than just a children’s song. They deserve our recognition, respect, and gratitude. Let us celebrate their immense beauty, honor the indelible mark they’ve left on the landscape of human existence, and remain in awe of their enduring significance in the tapestry of farm life.”

In a world that often overlooks the simple, soulful expressions of farm animals, Randal’s book is a welcome tribute to their grace, humor, and resilience. “My hope is that each caption invites you to sit with these amazing creatures, reflect on their contributions to the world around us, and learn from them along the way,” Randal concludes.
