Nikon to launch the Z 6 III with Content Authenticity in 2025

Nikon has announced that it is developing new firmware for the Nikon Z6 III that will introduce Content Credentials. However, you’ll have to be patient to get it – the update is expected to be released in 2025.

Content Authenticity is a technology that tracks image information, including the creator’s name and date of creation. It does this by “stamping” the photo with this data and can also track edits made to the image. This “stamp” is called Content Credentials.

The initiative behind Content Credentials is the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA). This technology aims to address concerns about the authenticity of images in the digital age, particularly in light of the increasing sophistication of image editing and AI-generated content.

Nikon states that Content Credentials “designed to help protect the authenticity of [the Z 6III’s] users’ images and ensure peace of mind (…) make it easier for photographers to safeguard their work by preserving the original, unaltered data of each photo taken. This functionality will help verify image authenticity and protect users’ rights.”

The Nikon Z6 III will be the first Nikon camera to feature Content Credentials, following in the footsteps of the Leica M11-P, which was the first camera to incorporate this technology. It also comes as a part of an Adobe app named Adobe Content Authenticity. The firmware update is currently being tested by “select agencies” and professionals, and Nikon plans to make it available to a broader audience in 2025. There’s no word on the price and whether the Content Credentials-enriched Z 6 III will be more expensive than the current price tag of $2,500.
