Long before people were complaining about the ridiculously high resolution, storage and editing demands of the RED 8K Helium sensor, Canon had already announced that it was working on an 8K camera, a prototype of which was shown off at the Canon Expo 2015 in Paris.

Since then, it’s been radio silence. 8K doesn’t have quite the same impact that it had back in 2015 and Canon has now also released the EOS R5 which, for better or worse, shoots 8K RAW video. But now Canon is teasing the impending announcement of their 8K cine camera, by releasing a bunch of sample footage shot with it.

There are three videos so far, all viewable in up to 8K resolution at 60 frames per second (!). Ok, so most of us don’t have screens capable of putting out that kind of resolution just yet, so it’s going to be difficult to watch them back at their full resolution via the web. You could, theoretically download the video files, bring them into an editor and check out at crop at 100% zoom, but you’re still not seeing the full detail as you’ve got to deal with YouTube’s compression.

There is no news on when Canon may announce this camera, nor are there any specs other than the 8K resolution and the fact that it seems to be able to shoot it at up to 60 frames per second.

And while it’s difficult to tell for sure, due to most of the camera movements being quite slow in the above videos, there are a couple of clips with fast pans which suggest that the new camera might actually contain a global shutter sensor. Either that or Canon has really gotten a handle on correcting rolling shutter issues.

I Would prefer a 4-6 k 120 FPS image with better dynamic range and more colour depth to justify the file sizes.
