If you want to get soft flattering light, you would need to diffuse it. This video by Todd Blankenship, covers three ways to diffuse your point light source.

Of course, the first thing that Todd does is showing you how not to diffuse your light. As you may have guessed, simply throwing some baking paper on a light source will not diffuse it. If you clip the backing paper directly to the diffuser it just does not make your light source bigger.

Fotodiox 4′ x 4′ Collapsible Frame ($189)

For $189, you can get a Fotodiox 4′ x 4′ Collapsible Frame. This is a kind of collapsible frame, and as the name suggests, it 4′ by 4′ which provides a decent amount of diffusion.

Opal Frost ($124)

You can think of Opal Frost as a gel. For $124 you’ll get a roll of a nylon-y material that easily mounts on a boom arm (or c-stand). This gel is made from high-quality diffusion material and is practically endless.

Shower Curtain ($10)

Of course, if it’s just size you want, you can go for a $10 white shower curtain. It will probably “eat” more light than the other two options, but its also significantly cheaper.

depending on which shower curtain you buy your f-stop is going to vary… of course.
Grab one of the One Dollar Store translucent inner liners and put that in front of any soft-box and because your source light is now “bigger” and you put some distance between the source and the curtain … I do 1 meter usually the light becomes window light with a quality that rivals the top scrim materials! This is a very good article to share with budget conscious content creators.
