For those using a full-frame Nikon Z mirrorless camera, a good portrait lens can make a huge difference. Now, Viltrox is entering the scene with an updated model that’s worth checking out. The new Viltrox AF 85mm f/2 Evo for Z-mount is a compact but powerful option. Sometimes you need an excellent 85mm lens that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.
Viltrox AF 85mm f/2 EVO: Your New Portrait Go-To
This lens is an 85mm prime, a favorite among portrait photographers for its perfect field of view. Viltrox designed it for full-frame Nikon Z-mount cameras, ensuring you get that classic 85mm experience.
The standout feature here is the maximum aperture of f/2. This wide opening allows for excellent light capture, making it ideal for low-light situations. For portraits, that f/2 aperture creates a lovely shallow depth of field, helping to blur out distracting backgrounds and highlight your subject. Viltrox claims the lens offers a natural look and smooth separation between the subject and background, and the specifications support this claim. If you need a smaller aperture for landscape shots or to achieve focus on everything, you can stop down to f/16.
The lens is also relatively small, measuring approximately 2.7 by 3 inches, and it weighs just 12.7 oz (360 g), making it easy to carry around throughout the day.
Peeking at the Viltrox AF 85mm f/2 EVO’s Glass
Inside the lens, there are 10 elements organized into eight groups. Viltrox added two extra-low dispersion (ED) elements and two high-refractive index (HR) elements to help reduce chromatic aberrations and other distortions. Their goal is to create high-contrast images that are sharp throughout the entire frame. We’ll have to wait and see how it does in real-life situations, but the design seems promising.
Additionally, Viltrox applied a high-definition nano multilayer coating. This coating is designed to minimize issues such as reflections and flare, which helps keep images clear even when shooting against bright lights. The lens also has a water-resistant and anti-fouling coating, which should make it more durable by resisting dust, water, and those annoying smudges that can accumulate. It appears they’re aiming to create a particularly tough lens for everyday use.

Autofocus and That Sneaky USB-C Port
When taking a quick portrait, having reliable focus is essential. The Viltrox AF 85mm f/2 features an STM stepping motor for its autofocus. According to Viltrox, this system is quiet and precise, providing smooth and fast focusing, which is essential for both photography and videography. Additionally, you still have the option for manual focus, allowing you to make adjustments when you need to focus more precisely.
This lens has a minimum focus distance of 2.43 feet (0.74 meters), allowing you to get reasonably close to your subject, which is excellent for close-up headshots. It also accepts 58mm filters, a popular size that’s easy to find, so that you won’t have a problem attaching a Circular Polarizer or ND filter.
A helpful feature is the built-in USB-C port. This allows you to perform firmware updates on your own, helping ensure that your lens works well as Viltrox releases updates. I believe all third-party lens manufacturers should include this feature; it certainly makes things easier for photographers.
