Viltrox 56mm f/1.2 Pro lens

Viltrox has announced a new addition to its “Pro” series with the AF 56mm f/1.2, a large-aperture APS-C prime lens available for Sony E and Fujifilm X mounts. While the 56mm focal lengthWhat is focal length in photography? is familiar territory for Viltrox, this is the first time they’ve paired it with an f/1.2 aperture – offering a faster option in what’s become a go-to range for portrait and general-purpose photography.

Designed for Portrait Work

On APS-C sensors, the 56mm focal length offers an 84mm full-frame equivalent, which is one of the favorites for portrait photographers. The standout feature here is the fast f/1.2 aperture, which allows for stronger background blur and better low-light performance compared to Viltrox’s previous 56mm lenses.

Optical and Autofocus Improvements

The internal optical design consists of 13 elements in 8 groups. It includes one extra-low dispersion (ED), three high-refractive index (HR), and one aspherical element. This should help control common issues such as chromatic aberration and fringing – typically more noticeable in faster lenses when shot wide open.

Autofocus performance gets a boost with the use of a Voice Coil Motor (VCM) system instead of the more common STM mechanism. Viltrox says this allows for faster, quieter operation. That might make the lens more appealing to video shooters or anyone working in quieter environments where motor noise can become an issue.

Practical Features for Daily Use

When it comes to the build, the lens includes weather-resistant construction and a Nano Multi-Layer Coating on the front element to help with water and smudge resistance. The filter thread is a standard 67mm, consistent with other f/1.2 lenses in Viltrox’s range, which should make filter swapping a bit more convenient if you already own others in the series.

There’s also a USB-C port integrated into the lens body for firmware updates, which continues to be a useful – if not entirely common – feature on third-party lenses.
