Vaxis, typically better known for its wireless video transmission systems is branching out. They’re getting into the world of filters and they’re kicking it off with a line of 4×5.65″ cine FX filters. Designed to slot straight into the industry-standard 4×5.65″ filter slot in your matte box (sorry, PolarPro users), the new range of filters offers a variety of different lighting and flaring effects for your shot.

There are five filters in total, with three of them coming in three different options to produce slightly different looks. Being 4×5.65″ filters they’ll work with most of the lightweight matte boxes out there these days from companies like Tilta, SmallRig as well as the vastly more expensive systems.

The five filters are the Star-cross filter, Rainbow Dazzle Filter, Rainbow True-Streak filter, White True-Streak filter and the Blue True-Streak filter. And each of the True-Streak filters comes in 1mm, 2mm or 3mm options for spacing of those streaks. They’re essentially creating interference in front of your lens, causing the lights to flare in very specific ways.

Each filter offers a different effect and look to your shot that can’t easily be simulated in post. They’re not looks you’ll want for every shot you do, but I could see them becoming quite handy for music videos, dream sequences or other scenes where you’re trying to stress some disorientation. The True-Streak filters seem to provide an almost anamorphic-like lens flare in certain conditions – which is possibly why they’ve created a blue one.

The new Vaxis FX filters cost between $299 and $319 each, depending on which you want to go for. The entire set including all three variants of each colour of True-Streak totals 11 different filters. So, it’s going to be expensive if you want the lot. But Vaxis is running a pre-order sale where you can receive 20% off the cost of your FX filter order using the code VFXPREORDER on checkout in the Vaxis shop.
