Sometimes, you see a video that makes you just go “wtf did I just watch?”. This snowboarding short, A GoPro Adventure in Les 3 Vallees, by filmmaker Claudiu Voicu is a perfect example of that. Shot entirely with the GoPro Hero 6 and GoPro Fusion, this three-minute video contains some of the most challenging shot transitions out there. Oh, and giant aliens.
Despite being a personal project, this looks like a lot of extremely hard work. And why wouldn’t it be? I’ve always found that the personal projects deserve just as much passion as those you’re being paid for, if not more. Personal projects push us and our abilities. They force us out of our comfort zone, or at least they should. It’s how we improve.
The amount of filming and effort that went into this is quite staggering. And certain sequences will have had to have been filmed more than once in order for the transitions to work. But the end result is definitely worth it.
One of the things I find particularly interesting about this, aside from the tricky transitions, is the use of 360° footage. It’s something I’ve been experimenting with myself using the YI 360 VR with the Insta360 software. It lets you keyframe and track different viewpoints to give the impression of a moving, flat, 2D camera. This seems to be the way a lot of 360 footage is being used at the moment to simulate a regular camera rather than for viewing in a VR headset.
I stopped counting the transitions about halfway through because I was just floored by the video itself. But how many did you spot?
