The complete Canon 1DX Mark III specs have leaked – shows 20.1mp sensor and 5.4K RAW internal video

The Canon EOS 1DX Mark III has been talked about quite a bit since the initial development announcement in October 2019. Canon has been not-so-strangely quiet about the specs, although a few were announced during the development announcement that has since formed the basis of the pre-order listing at various online retailers.
Now, the full specs appear to have been leaked, if this report on Canon Rumors is accurate. It shows a 20.1-megapixel sensor (same as the Mark II) with 5.4K RAW internal video capabilities. The fact that these are leaking now, especially with rumours of a Nikon announcement at CES, we might hear more official word on this one in the next few days, too.
I’ll post a longer list of specs below but these are the biggest highlights, which will no doubt produce some mixed feelings.
- 20.1-megapixel CMOS sensor with Dual Pixel AF, 191 AF points (151 fully cross-type)
- Liveview autofocus works down to -6EV, and PDAF on the optical viewfinder works down to -4EV
- There’s no DPAF when shooting 4K 60p or RAW video
- 5.4K RAW video, but it’s 2.6Gbps output, which is gonna be huge files (and why it needs CFexpress cards)
The lack of Dual Pixel autofocus when shooting 4K 60p or 5.4K RAW video will no doubt be a dealbreaker for some, although the inclusion of 5.4K RAW video at all will just feel superfluous to those who only want to use it for its stills capabilities. And while the 20.1-megapixel sensor doesn’t offer the resolution bump some might have been hoping for, the larger buffer and the faster CFexpress storage will allow you to shoot those stills very quickly.
The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III will be blisteringly fast – offering exceptional precision, reliability, high-performance autofocus, and subject tracking – providing photographers with a tool that will help to capture the shot they are chasing. The camera’s new autofocus algorithm will improve stability and tracking when using both the Optical Viewfinder and in Live View shooting mode, using Deep Learning Technology and adapting to help facilitate accurate focus tracking for every shot. When using the optical viewfinder the camera will use a new autofocus sensor, with approximately 28 times the resolution in the center of the EOS-1D X Mark II. Offering the ability to autofocus in even brighter and darker situations than before and with greater precision, the camera will have a range of autofocus capabilities, which will enable the photographer to get their shot.
One thing that does seem to be very clear from the specs leak is that it will likely not contain IBIS as there’s no mention of stabilisation anywhere.

Even the list above is somewhat cut down from the leak to help better organise the more important overview, but for the complete list of the specs and details, check out the post on Canon Rumors.
If this leaked list is accurate, the Canon 1DX Mark III is going to be a very formidable camera amongst sports and wildlife photographers. It will be interesting to see how Nikon responds in the form of the D6, about which there have been very few rumours.

Not impressive enough.
and you are using today?
Which kidney should you choose to sell to afford it?
I think that while it’s impossible to reduce flange distance of the EF (or F mount), other mirrorless technologies could be adapted to a DSLR:
– top screen could be TFT instead on LCD
– it should be possible to have hybrid finder, like the one found in the Fuji X100
– if a hybrid finder is too complex, there’s absolutely no reason why a DSLR shouldn’t have a EVF add on, like the Canon EVF-DC1/2 or the Leica Visoflex
– AF sensors should be both at the sensor and bellow the mirror. When using EVF, the mirror should go up which should allow the camera the ability to AF near the frame
– IBIS
Hopefully Canon or Nikon will deliver, though Nikon is far more serious about DSLR’s. The 5D mark IV isn’t at all the same level as the D850. The 7D mark II wasn’t replaced in long time, while Nikon introduced the D500. The 6D mark II isn’t really a huge improvement over the 6D, and hardly any better than the 5-years old D750, that’s soon to be replaced.
Nikon also introduced far more new F-lenses, that Canon has EF-lenses.
One part of the problem is maybe that Canon cameras are made in Japan, while Nikon are made in Thailand and other countries. However to put made in Japan in a watch it doesn’t really have to be made in Japan, it’s enough that QC and management is from Japan. I would guess that detail doesn’t increase the costs so much.
The real problem is Canon is jumping on the Sony mirrorless hype fooling people trough influencers to fire sell their actual gear and buy all again at even higher prices. So, my guess is Canon will keep the best features for the pro R camera equivalent of the 1D mark III, artificially forcing to switch from EF to RF.
Didn’t the 1DX Mark II have Dual Pixel Autofocus in 4K 60fps?
Weird its successor doesn’t.
And yet a simple sony a6600 ar a quater of the price Will beat this specs, I mean GYST canon that’s why we all jumped the boat many years ago!
Rafael A. P. Maduro uh.. not for what professionals who use this type of camera, get it for.?
Robert Welch i know I compared apple to oranges but you do understand my point right? I own Canon gear as well and I felt they are so behind playing catchup with other brands that is crazy the little effort they put in development for the users, not a fan of sony system as I felt I was towards canon in the past but you have to recognize that other brands started to listen and implementing fixes, sure they have a long way to go.
Rafael A. P. Maduro doubt the Sony has anything like the toughness of the 1dx
Oh, and the iPhone 11 is better then the sony too
Francisco Abreu Onofre hahaha yes with my low cost A6500 I earn 80k a year, maybe is not much in the states but I do work 20 to 40 hours a month and live in Aruba. (Sadly crying with my piña colada in the beach)
Rafael A. P. Maduro you only work 20 to 40 hours a month?!?! You use a Sony A6500….. and you earn 80k a year just from that alone….???? So basically your saying you do absolutely no editing at all… because straight out of camera whether it’s still or video there is 100% editing involved, and as everyone know especially professionals that takes time it’s not a 5 minute process. So to be honest I’m a little dubious of your claim… well done you though for living in Aruba and sipping your cocktail ?
Having to attach a dongle for anything in a camera of this caliber is a no-no.
Why still only 20.1mp? The 5dii has that
Probably to get insane burst rates with wireless transmission
Geoffrey Enriquez just seems low. Even the 5div is 30mp
their newest images processor for higher res is probably way too advanced to bring it to the table this year so they use a previous gen?
But where is the hybrid viewfinder?
Adam Biggin it’s definitely lower MP but in exchange you get high FPS and apparently 1000+ RAW buffer.
impressive???? is that a joke?
I wanna bye it
