Skylum has come a long way since the Macphun days. Since breaking out of their Mac-only shell and expanding out into Windows, their software has come on leaps and bounds for both platforms in terms of both capabilities as well as performance. We caught up with Skylum CEO, Alex Tsepko, at PhotoPlus 2019 in New York last month to have a chat about the new features coming to Luminar 4.
Six steps for a quick portrait retouch
Skylum Luminar has seen some pretty massive changes over the last couple of years. The latest version, Luminar 4, particularly so. It’s had a lot of cool new AI enhancements, like easy sky replacements, and the Structure tool which identifies the different parts of your image and enhances the most important bits.
More recently, they’ve also been showing off some new tools for portrait shooters, too, like the AI Skin Enhancer. We visited the Skylum stand at PhotoPlus 2019 in New York where Skylum’s Chief Growth Officer and founder of 500px, Evgeny Tchebotarev, gives us a walkthrough of processing a portrait in Luminar 4.

Skylum shows off the new Luminar 4 Sky Replacement feature in action
Sky replacements are fairly common in photography these days. Not everybody is shooting a camera with a wide enough dynamic range to always capture a well-exposed subject without a blown out sky. Or, perhaps the sky on the day you were shooting is just a bit boring. Typically, we take to Photoshop to do the sky replacement and blend it in with our foreground scene.
Luminar 4, though, is coming with a new AI Sky Replacement feature, first mentioned last month. Now, Skylum has released a video showing the sky replacement feature in action in the latest beta edition of Luminar 4.
