Luminar AI is now available and wants to automate your editing

Skylum has already introduced some of the features of Luminar AI, the new software that aims to automatize and speed up editing. It’s now officially launched, so you can get your copy and see for yourself what it can do.

We have already seen the demo of some Luminar AI features such as Templates and sky replacement with reflections. As the name suggests, Luminar AI uses artificial intelligence to edit images, meaning that it recognizes what’s in your photo and what kind of editing would suit it best.

“The built-in AI assistant in Templates sees the relationships between all of the elements in a photo, thanks to 3D depth mapping” the CPO of Skylum Dima Sytnik explains. “Templates are designed with the help of many incredibly well-respected photographers and photo editors, to achieve very specific edits and enhancements to individual components of an image.”

You can choose to apply the suggested or any other edits and leave them as they are. But if you still want to have control over your edits, you can tweak the changes or tone them down with sliders.

Tools for portrait photos include BodyAI, which lets you change a subject’s body shape. I personally wouldn’t change anyone’s physical appearance this way, but this tool is useful to correct distortion if you took the photo with a wide-angle lens. You can enhance the eyes with IrisAI, and you can even change their color or add a twinkling light. FaceAI and SkinAI put the emphasis on fine-tuning the details of a subject’s face, and they allow you to reduce blemishes and shine.

For landscape photographers, SkyAI is there to let them tweak the sky. The tool automatically recognizes the sky in an image and offers various edits or replacement tweaks. AtmosphereAI allows you to add realistic effects like fog, mist, and haze, while automatically recognizing other elements to the image.

There are also tools made for all types of photos. These include AccentAI tool which automatically enhances your images; and CompositionAI which suggests the perfect crop for your image.

Luminar AI is now available as both a standalone application, plugin for Lightroom Classic and Photoshop, as well as an extension for Apple Photos. Shipping has already started and you can order it on Skylum’s website. A license for one computer costs €79, and a license for two computers is €99.
