The 3D printed MicBack turns your on-camera mic into a wireless shotgun

Despite being referred to as on-camera microphones, the array of such microphones from companies like Rode, Deity, Sennheiser and others are just as capable when used as an off-camera microphone, too. However, the one problem with using them off-camera is that the cables supplied with them are extremely short. After all, they’re only designed to go from your hotshoe to your microphone socket.

Even if you do pick up a long third-party cable, these microphones aren’t designed for long cable runs. The best option is to use them wirelessly. That, too, can be tricky on the end of a boom pole. However, Caleb Pike at DSLR Video Shooter has created a great-looking solution, called the MicBack, to solve this problem with several small on-camera shotgun microphones.

Deity expands out of microphones with their new timecode generators and smart slate

Deity Microphones has expanded its product lineup with a couple of interesting new devices. There’s the Deity TC-SL1 digital wireless smart slate and there’s the Deity TC-1 wireless timecode generator – available individually or in packs of three. Multiple TC-1 units can communicate and sync up with each other as well as with the TC-SL1 to help sync multiple different types of cameras.

Both the Deity TC-SL1 and TC-1 feature remote control via Bluetooth through the free smartphone app Sidus Audio. They put out all SMPTE formats and boast less than 1 frame of drift over a 24 hour period. As well as syncing over Bluetooth, there’s also 5-pin Lemo and 1/4″ TRS sockets on the TC-SL1 and 3.5mm TRS on the TC-1 that can take a timecode feed in from somewhere else or feed it out to your camera.

If, like me, you use your cameras for video as well as photography, then at some point (probably sooner rather than later) you’re going to need to think about sound. While audio setups can get extremely elaborate, especially once you start doing more serious video, you’ll want to at least get some kind of microphone that you can plug right into your camera, regardless of whether you’re vlogging or trying to sync up separately recorded audio in post.

Here, we’re going to look at some of the best microphones you can get for vlogging that plug directly into your camera in 2022 and go through some of the advantages of each and where it might be worth spending a little extra money. We’ve split this up into two categories. First, there are the on-camera mics which as the name suggests, sit on top of your camera. The other are the wireless microphones which allow a little more freedom of movement in front of the camera.

Deity has finally released their BP-TRX wireless audio transceiver/recorder unit

It took a minute, but Deity has finally announced the release of their BP-TRX audio transceiver with a built-in recorder. Designed to fit seamlessly into the Deity Connect ecosystem, the BP-TRX can also work completely independently, on its own as a field recorder or as a pair to send audio wirelessly to your camera or another recording device.

As with many wireless audio systems these days, the Deity BP-TRX is a digital wireless system running on 2.4Ghz. And as well as audio, it can also be used for timecode to more easily sync up multiple cameras using either an external timecode generator or by creating a signal of its own. The BP-TRX can also transmit audio and record simultaneously (although not if you’re in the USA).

When I first saw the Deity Connect Interview kit at IBC 2019, my eyes lit up. Seeing wireless solutions for interviews packed neatly into a box, I knew that this kit would be something to look at. The enormous list of things that his kit to do is amazing. Two transmitters, one receiver, internal recording for backup, adaptive frequency hopping, and rechargeable. And now, we finally have it- It really is an amazing solution.

There is one big question you ask yourself if you want to buy a wireless audio solution. UHF or 2.4GHz. Let’s get this out the way right now. The Deity kit is, in fact, a 2.4ghz system. But before you ditch the article, I recommend you read it until the end. Spoiler alert: It’s worth it!

Microphones come with a whole lot of technical and confusing sounding specifications. Ultimately, what matters to people most is how they sound. But not all sounds are created equally, nor are all microphones. Different types of microphones and different specs of the same type of microphone handle certain sounds better than others, and some are just better built.

Deity’s S-Mic 2S short shotgun microphone is an evolution of their popular S-Mic 2 shotgun microphone. They had them on show at IBC 2019, but we were too focused on Deity’s new Connect wireless microphone system to notice. Now, though, the S-Mic 2S is getting ready to ship.

The Deity S-Mic 2S is essentially a shorter version of the Deity S-Mic 2, which has become one of my favourite shotgun microphones, offering a nice rich sound right out of the box. The S-Mic 2S has a similar sound but is tuned better for smaller spaces, but also fits well on top of the camera, too, for things like vlogging.
