It’s April 1st again, so the web has naturally been filling itself with April Fools pranks. Here are some of the ones we’ve seen so far from around the world. Did you fall for any of these? Have you spotted any that we haven’t seen yet? We’ll be updating this list as the day goes on and different timezones start waking up, so keep checking back!
If you run a video production company, you want to do your best to show off your skills. And if you need some inspiration, check out this awesome promo video Seed Creative. It shows everything you shouldn’t do in a promo video (or any video, ever), and I’m pretty sure it will make you laugh out loud.
Every year on this day I get trolled by at least one of my friends. And as if that weren’t enough, today I’ve been trolled by the news and YouTube videos from the moment I started working. I gotta admit – I even fell for one of these pranks for a moment!
So, I’m bringing you a list of the best photography-related pranks from all over the Internet. You can use them to prank your friends, and we’ll update the article throughout the day, so you can check back. And if you’ve read the photography news today and got excited about something, keep in mind that this post may spoil it for you.
April’s fools is a day of fun but also a day of caution for anyone getting near the internet. If you look at some of the past jokes, you’ll see that some of them came true. (Heck, DIYP once got the world to believe that we own the term Bokeh.)
If you are not sure if you are seeing a real new story or being hoaxed, head here and check to see if we covered this joke. Check back as this page updates every 30 minutes. Did we miss anything? let us know.
Along with your gentle reminder about the being extra curious in the next few days, here is a short reminder of how April Fools Day was celebrated in photography blogs over fifty years ago. Well, lacking internet and blogs, they had to pre-conceive their jokes in advance and put them to print in time for magazines to hit the shelves for Aprils 1st. (certainly, not being obvious like Trademarking Bokeh, heh).
In 1966. Tony Karp, a guy who knows his gear* put togetheran extensive Aprils Fools piece for Modern Photography. This included a tilt lens, screen guides, large format reflex, a camera that will give you an electric shock if you screw up, and a few other gadgets.
Here is the amazing thing. Many of those gadgets are now actual products. The Flexagon is very similar to a Lensbaby composer, EVFs can do composition overlays (see this crazy one from the Sony A7III if you drool over EVFs).
Go through the different pieces of gear and see how many of them turned up to be real in the last few years (hint: all). Hit us in the comments with the modern version of these shenanigans.
Although we have ran the occasional pranks in the past for April Fools’ Day, we decided not to do one this year. We wanted to just sit back and enjoy everybody else’s jokes this year. As it’s already April 1st in Australia, a few have started coming through already.
We’ll be updating this post as the day goes on and different timezones start hitting midnight. So, keep checking back. And if you spot a good one that’s not listed, let us know in the comments!
UPDATE: well, I guess you got it by now, you don’t need our Auxiliary Layers as they are no different from the layers you make yourself in Photoshop :), just some harmless April’s fools mischief – If you did download the package, there is a sweet 20% off surprise for you there.
It’s been a while since we opened the Image Manipulation Store and we are quite happy with how it works and the community forming around it. This is why we approached our German partners and asked them to create the most awesome package they can. They said yes! thus creating the Auxiliary Layers package.
