Every year on this day I get trolled by at least one of my friends. And as if that weren’t enough, today I’ve been trolled by the news and YouTube videos from the moment I started working. I gotta admit – I even fell for one of these pranks for a moment!
So, I’m bringing you a list of the best photography-related pranks from all over the Internet. You can use them to prank your friends, and we’ll update the article throughout the day, so you can check back. And if you’ve read the photography news today and got excited about something, keep in mind that this post may spoil it for you.
1. Sony quits camera business
Sony recently merged its TV, audio, and camera product lines. The company has been struggling with Xperia phones, and this morning’s “news” from Photo Rumors suggests that the camera department can’t hold much longer. So, Sony has decided to shut down its camera business because it can’t compete with Nikon and Canon. Fortunately, this is just an April Fools’ joke.
2. Nikon instant camera
Canon recently announced its instant printer with a built-in camera. Following this step from its competitor, Nikon has decided to go the same route. According to Nikon Rumors, the company is about to launch its own instant camera soon. And I gotta admit I fell for this for a brief moment. I mean, it would be a logical move, if you ask me.
Nikon Rumors also has a “leaked image” of Nikon’s upcoming “instant camera.” Too bad it’s actually a retinal imaging device.
3. Nikon for the left-handed
Here’s another one from Nikon Rumors, who report that Nikon is about to launch a DSLR for the left-handed. It’s an April Fools’ prank, but it would be kinda cool to have a camera for lefties, right?
4. Leica and Zeiss merging
If I try to imagine a merger that would produce the most expensive cameras and lenses in the world, it would be Leica merging with Zeiss. And this merger is actually possible, according to Dear Susan. Well, at least on April 1st.
5. Vintalens – hipster photographers’ best friend
Mathieu Stern has published a fun video about “Vintalens,” a kit that lets you turn your fancy, modern lens into a vintage lens. The kit includes a bottle “grandpa’s attic dust,” a bender for recreating that “dented filter look,” and a pack of fungus spores for the final touch.
6. Sony, Fuji, and Nikon will make your wishes come true
Sony fans, rejoice: the a7S III has been announced! There’s something for Fuji users, too: Fuji has decided to go full frame. And for those of you who complained of Nikon Z’s lack of dual card slot: that’s about to change with a new grip. Yeah, only in Jared Polin’s prank April 1st video.
7. Adobe Capture scent library
Have you ever thought about how cool it would be to add a scent to your images? I know I have, especially when I photograph flowers and food. Well, using the latest Scent-sei technology, Adobe could make this happen. Thanks to Adobe Capture, you’ll be able to gather all kinds of scents with your smartphone and save them to your Adobe Library.
Of course, this is a pretty obvious April Fools’ joke. But just imagine how cool it would be!
8. Shutterstock’s brick and mortar stock library
Shutterstock is one of the biggest online stock libraries. But they’ve decided to make their collection tangible, so they’re opening the world’s largest physical library full of high-quality watermarked music, film and images. “Innovation sometimes means moving backwards,” Shutterstock explains. But not today. Today is the International Trolling Day, so Shutterstock’s just trolling us.
