Syrp talks about the new app, the Vitec acquisition and what it means for customers

Syrp has released a new app for iOS and Android to allow you to control your Syrp products from your mobile device. Addressing a number of issues with the original Syrp app, the new app offers a cleaner easy-to-use interface to increase workflow efficiency on location.

Syrp was also recently acquired by Vitec, which was something of a surprise. But it’s an acquisition that offers a lot of promise for both Syrp as a company as well as Syrp’s customers. DIYP spoke with Syrp at NAB 2019 to find out more about the new app, the acquisition and what benefits it provides for users of Syrp products as well as potential future customers around the world.

The new app for controlling Syrp kit is available for both iOS and Android and is designed to speed up efficiency and minimise the setup time to create your shot. It uses simple on-screen joystick controls to move the carriage along the slider and to also adjust the pan and tilt angle of the Syrp Genie II. It allows you to easily go to your start and end points to set keyframes, which you can then adjust with easing.

You can even place new keyframes in the middle in case you need a more complex camera move. And now you can easily switch between video and timelapse mode to recreate the same movement over a few seconds or a few hours.

The app is still fairly new, and while it does have many of the basic features that timelapse and video shooters require, there are still a few more that need to be implemented. Those will be arriving in the coming weeks and months.

We also spoke with Syrp about the Vitec acquisition and what it means for the future of the company, as well as how it benefits Syrp customers. Vitec’s existing distribution channels are obviously a huge boost for Syrp. It means that they can get their products in the hands of more people around the globe, and people can more easily get hold of them. It allows the guys from Syrp, who are staying on to run thins, to concentrate on product research and development.

In short, it allows Syrp to play to their strengths while taking advantage of Vitec’s own strengths. This helps them to bring products to market much more quickly and allows them to dedicate the time to develop even better products.

You can download the new Syrp Genie II app for iOS from the Apple App Store or for Android from the Google Play Store. And despite the name, it’s compatible with all of Syrp’s previous model products, too, not just the Genie II.

We would love to send a shoutout to our sponsors who helped bring you this NAB 2019 coverage: Artlist, StoryBlocks Video, SYRP, B&H, Spiffy Gear.
