Sigma Adds a Bright 12mm f/1.4 Lens to its Fujifilm X-Mount Lineup

Sigma has just announced a new wide-angle prime for FUJIFILM X shooters, the 12mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary. The lens is designed specifically for APS-C cameras and gives an 18mm full-frame equivalent field of view, making it a great option for landscapes, interiors, street photography, or even vlogging.

At f/1.4, it’s the fastest ultra-wide prime in Sigma’s Contemporary line for X-mount. That wide aperture not only helps in low light but also gives you some subject separation, which isn’t always easy to achieve with ultra-wide lenses.

Optical design

The lens is built with 14 elements in 12 groups, including three double-sided aspherical elements to control distortion and maintain sharpness, and two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) elements to cut down on chromatic aberration. The front element also has a water- and oil-repellent coating, so raindrops and fingerprints won’t stick as easily.

Build and handling

Sigma says the new 12mm f/1.4 is the lightest prime in its f/1.4 DC Contemporary series. It’s also about 20% shorter than the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN, which should make it easier to carry and balance, especially for handheld video shooters.

Other practical features include:

  • Aperture ring for direct control
  • Rounded 9-blade diaphragm for smoother bokeh
  • Minimum focusing distance of 6.8 inches
  • 62mm front filter thread
  • Dust- and splash-resistant construction

Autofocus

Autofocus is driven by a stepping motor for smooth and quiet focusing. Sigma also points out that the design minimises focus breathing, which is good news for video users.
