Used Cameras See Surge in Demand as Photographers Seek Affordable, Sustainable Gear

MPB, which operates across the US, Europe, and the UK, announced that for the financial year ending March 2025, it recirculated more than 564,000 items of used photo and video kit. The company also recorded a net revenue increase of 19%, with international markets growing 28%.

MPB’s CEO, Matt Barker, highlighted that the growth reflects both affordability and the rise of circular business models. “Demand for high-quality, second-hand equipment continues to grow, supported by the rise of digital content creation and increasing global adoption of circular models,” he said. 

This shift aligns with broader consumer trends toward responsible purchasing and eco-conscious practices.

While the secondhand market offers many advantages, there are also considerations to keep in mind. Used gear may show signs of wear or require servicing, and buyers should ensure proper testing and inspection before purchase. 

Platforms like MPB mitigate risk by offering quality checks and detailed product descriptions, but it’s still important for users to understand what they are buying.

Additionally, certain high-demand items, such as flagship cameras and professional lenses, can still carry premium prices on the secondhand market. Even though the overall cost is lower than new gear, budgeting and research remain important steps for any buyer.
