Photographer Boon Vong shared an interesting tip with us today about using LED ceiling lighting panels to light portraits.
Boon told us that, The product is one of many led light fixtures that are manufactured in China. As far as I know they are sold wholesale in large quantities to resellers here in America that would want to outfit offices with these power saving lights
The LED panel is an aluminum body with LEDs inside. That frame is covered by a diffuser. All the LED’s are in turn hooked up to an LED driver / AC power adapter. For the prototype we quickly made the mounting/swivel bracket and put it on a light stand.
This is how Boon describes the fixture above:
“… an LED light panel assembled using an ordinary lighting fixture (from China) and some parts we made, like the aluminum swivel bracket and the mounting support. Combine that with a lightstand and a power outlet, and all of a sudden I have a low wattage, cool to the touch, ridiculously bright (but not so bright that you can’t look at it) studio/cinema light” #
And the best part is that the back can now serve as an ad hoc commercial or fun board.
Here a product shot taken with this light
Here is an example of how the light can be used in a studio
Here are some more samples take with this lighting. Head over to Boon site for the full details including white balance, video usage and more.
