Aputure has announced its new INFINIBAR Pixel Bar series of LED sticks. These are the company’s first RGBWW full-colour LED pixel bars that can be connected to create various shapes. They’re available in 1ft, 2ft and 4ft options, with a number of connectors to configure your shapes. Each of the three INFINIBAR models has a pixel density of 24 pixels per foot (2 per inch or about 1 every 12.7mm).

Aputure says the INFINIBAR’s “infinite blending design” and “ultra-smooth Pixel FX […] unlock new possibilities for lighting design both on and off-camera”. I’m not entirely sure how these should be used on-camera, but that’s what they say. They feature a bunch of connectivity options, including wired and wireless DMX, as well as wireless remote control from the Sidus Link app.

There are three lights in the INFINIBAR series. There’s the PB3 (30cm/12″) , the PB6 (60cm/24″) and the PB12 (120cm/48″). Unlike regular LED tubes, the Aputure INFINIBAR fixtures offer a rectangular design rather than the standard rounded tube form factor. With a pixel density of 24 pixels per foot, the PB3 contains 24, the PB6 contains 48 and the PB12 contains 96 pixels, each comprised of an RGBWW cluster of LEDs.

INFINIBAR is Aputure’s first line of linear lights outside of the lower-end Amaran brand. Aputure says this means they were designed with advanced features for professional filmmaking workflows. That means high pixel density, infinite blending design and an endless configurability for many lighting shapes, practical effects and setups. They also feature all the usual remote control options, including LumenRadio CRMX, wired DMX over USB-C and from within the Sidus Link app.

Aputure says that the system’s most unique feature is the ability to link multiple units together. You can mix together all three different sizes using 10 differently shaped connectors to design your own custom shapes. Multiple INFINIBARs can also be powered from a single power supply when using the power-sharing connectors, or they can use their internal batteries. Aputure doesn’t say what the maximum limit is that you can connect together, but judging from the promotional video above, it’s high enough for most circumstances.

The RGBWW chipset contained within the INFINIBAR lights is a proprietary chipset which Aputure says offers a wide colour temperature range from 2,000K up to 10,000K with green-magenta adjustment and a high CRI/TLCI of 96+/98+. They say it can reproduce more than 90% of the colours within the Rec.2020 colour space, making them ideal for cinematographers and lighting designers who need adaptable and precise fixtures.

The design philosophy of INFINIBAR is great to see in a very saturated market. There are more lighting companies out there than you can shake a stick at these days, and they all seem to be releasing very similar items to each other. In this case, though, while most of the companies are going with tubes, Aputure’s going with bars that offer a lot of physical configuration options.

The Aputure INFINIBAR PB3 is available to pre-order now for $299, the PB6 is available to pre-order now for $479 and the PB12 is available to pre-order now for $639.
