How I Took It 2012 Contest

UPDATE: A huge thank you for everyone who took part in this adventure. It was overwhelming. You can see the final results here.

DIYP has always been big about sharing information among photographers. Today we are taking this concept one step further with our How I Took It Contest for 2012.

What Is The How I Took It Contest?

The How I Took It Contest is our way of making sharing knowledge just a little bit more fun. DIYP exists thanks to the huge support we get from the photography community and we’d like to give you a little bit back. The idea is pretty straightforward

While you have always been more than welcome to share a tutorial, tip or technique, submissions made with the How I Took It Contest will now give you the chance of winning one of our fabulous sets of prizes! Not to mention you’ll be crowned SuperNiceTog and have the eternal gratitude of the DIYP community.

So, What Are We Looking For?

We are looking for tutorials, tips, techniques and DIY projects that will help photographers grow. We are looking for phenomenal images and exciting videos that describe how the shot was taken, Beyond that, there are no limits! Your best shot to win this contest is to be fun, original and creative!

About Them Tutorials…

  • We love tutorials that will teach you how to use gear in both orthodox and unorthodox way. So we want to know what gear you used and how. (Simply including the ISO/F-stop/shutter speed just wont cut it)
  • We love detailed step by step tutorials that have the most intricate of details (think putting down measurements in metric and imperial)
  • We love to learn how to build new gear. Did you make something cool to use in the shoot? Let us know how you made it.
  • We love it just a bit out of the box too, Strobists, Light painters, Pinhole photographers, time lapse makers, Studio Dwelers and drop freezers we embrace you all. Did I forget anyone? Dazzle us!
  • You don’t like step by step? Fine! Surprise us!

And About Them Photographs / Videos

  • Make it awesome, or make it descriptive of the proejct, preferably both!
  • Photoshopping a bit is totally fine by us if it adds to the final product
  • This should go without saying, but I’m gonna say it anyways, you can only use photographs that you took.

How To Submit

Easy Peasy, Three simple steps:

  1. Write a tutorial sharing a tip, technique gear-build or lighting setup on your blog.
  2. Include the image from the top of this post in the first section of the post and link back to this post. (https://www.diyphotography.net/howitookit2012).This way we know that you wrote the tutorial for this contest.
  3. Add the link to the posting in the comments section below.

The cool entries will be reposted here on the blog till the contest is over.

What’s The Time Frame?

The contest will run from today (Aug 21st) until mid night, the last day of November (Nov 30th). That means that you have to write your entry and submit it to the comments before mid night on November 30th. It also means that you can submit any day from today until the end of the contest. The sooner, the better.

What if I don’t have a blog?

Don’t have a blog? That’s cool. Post the tutorial on your site, flickr or 500px, anywhere really. Just make sure to add the image and link. Don’t even have that? You can always sign up for a Flickr or blogger account, registration is free and easy. Don’t want to? Cool, mail it to us in this link. Make sure that the subject line it “How I Took It 2012 Contest”. Don’t use the internet? Well uh… you can write us a postcard!

I am not from The States / Europe / Earth , can I still participate?

Yes you can! Most of the prizes will be shipped free to your door steps (customs are on you) but a few items may require some shipping charges. Well, prepare to pay a lot if you are out of Earth, but for anywhere else, shipping costs would be significantly less than the value of the prizes.

The Fine Print

There isn’t a lot of fine print really. But we do have to make sure all bases are covered so…

  • You can only submit original work. Made by you. Yes, you. Not your sister, Not your father. Not your best friend. You!
  • Winners will be contacted by mail, and need to respond within 3 days. Some of the prizes require a choice and obviously we will need your address.
  • You must be 18 years old to enter or at the proper age at your country which allows you to enter (or have parental consent).
  • We’ll be featuring and reposting some of the entries to the contest, so by submitting you allow us to share your awesome work via the blog
