Google Photos’ unlimited storage is back, but there’s a catch

Around this time last year, Google ended its free unlimited cloud storage. To the joy of some users, the option is now back! But for the rest of us, there’s a major catch that could make it impossible to get the unlimited Google storage again.
As Photofocus reports, T-Mobile customers will soon be able to add unlimited cloud storage to their Google accounts. Starting from 26 April, it will be a part of a Google One plan that offers 2TB plus unlimited Google Photos storage.
As you could probably assume, this option will be paid extra. In my opinion, it’s not even cheap – it will cost you $15 a month. Still, it’s currently the only way to get unlimited Google Photos storage, so it could actually be handy and worth the money to some of you.
A new tier of Google One cloud storage plan is coming – exclusive to T-Mobile customers! @TMobile customers can get unlimited storage for photos and videos in Google Photos + 2 TB of cloud storage for just $15/month, starting April 26. But what about the rest of us who don’t even have T-Mobile in their country (yup, that would be me)? Or those who simply don’t want to pay extra for unlimited Google storage? Where, there certainly are some alternatives to look into, many of which are pretty affordable, too.

Also FYI, you get a free VPN with the 2TB plan. Some places charge $10-15 a month for a VPN anyway so that’s a pretty good addition to the unlimited storage :)
Lol
Gouging? I wasn’t aware that cloud storage for your photos was an essential life need that you couldn’t live without. Don’t like it? Don’t get it. :)
If you can’t find something like Proton Free VPN for free you high. Tons of em out there.
Degoo is a free unlimited storage app. You can download it on phone tablet or computer and sync it. You get free space everytime some you refer signs up. I’ve been using them for years. Better than shitty google.
I use Degoo too but it don’t have a good interface
You’ve obviously never heard of Bitcasa. Learned my lesson about free unlimited storage. Never again
The only way??? What are you talking about?? Every Pixel phone untill the 5 has unlimited photo storage!
Not true. Only pixel 1 had truly unlimited storage.
My question is, why only pixel 1?
Pixel 2-5 have unlimited “Data Saver” storage (i.e., web quality, not print/original quality). Only the Pixel 1 offers unlimited storage at original quality.
It’s $5 not $15. The normal 2tb tier is $10 to start with so just $5 more, you get the unlimited storage at original quality. Yes please! I’ll pay the extra $5!
Not sure I’m understanding the point? What in addition do you get for the Google one plan. I have a plan right now we’re I pay 2.99 for 200 gigs of storage. Why would I pay another 12 bucks to get free storage when I’m already paying for storage that I will never run out of? Not understanding. What additional perks come with paying for 2tb other than more storage?
I have the 2TB plan, and using 98% of my available storage. Mine is almost all photos. This would be amazing for me, but I am in Canada ?. My only current option on Google Photos is the 5TB upgrade, but I can’t afford that.
Maybe just delete some of them?
Difficult when you have that many, videos as well, and are on a family plan where 5 other family members photos also upload to the same storage. (As well as drive, Gmail, etc)
fellow data hoarder :D You know you wont use them anyways.
After 2tb, you’re better be off at self hosting with nextcloud or something like that. You could also get 2 to 3 times the storage for one year of Google cloud @ 5tb. The draw back is technical understanding, and dependant on your available bandwidth
How do you figure you’ll never run out of storage?
Well that’s you… I’ve used up 1tb of my online storage.
TMobile is garbage
It most certainly is not garbage. It’s better than all the other carriers
It’s worth it to me, been using Amazon photos since Google photos changed the free storage. But that’s only for photos. With this paid/unlimited photos and video, it’s what I need. Plus that includes motion photos, which Amazon doesn’t do
I have Amazon and Google Photos. Never used either one I just use the Gallery. You be better off buying a terabyte or two card and card reader if you’re phone doesn’t take SD.
Just flash a magisk module on your old phone for pixel 1 unlimited storage and use syncthing to sync between your main phone
It’s not free if you’re paying $15 a month. So they added it to your plan at no extra charge. It’s still not free. If it was free anyone could get it at no cost…..free.
Umm… That’s how most free gift works? ?♂️ Haven’t walked in to a shop and just randomly get stuff handed out for free.
Where is it specified that it’s free?
I pay 1.99 for 100Gb
More than I need and on top of that I can share it with my family
Then you won’t need the unlimited ?
I really miss Google photos unlimited storage. These days 100Gb and 200GB plan won’t be enough. Moreover would be good to have some option for people in other countries to get unlimited storage.
T-mobile doesn’t work everywhere. Rural Missouri and no signal so why would I want to go with them.
You’re not mentioning a crucial difference: the previously free “unlimited storage” used Google-reencoded copies of photos and videos. It was unlimited in count, but not in bytes.
But the newly offered unlimited storage offers actual unlimited storage for photos and videos, full size, not recompressed. This is a big difference. For video makers, for instance, the free unlimited storage was worthless, the real unlimited storage is not.
Honestly nothing could make me go back to the premium prices and sloppy customer service of Telstra, despite being hooking totally into the Google ecology.
But not for Fi customers?? ?
I have a NAS. Problem solved.
15 bucks a year through Google for 100gb of storage. just sayin’
