French photography magazine Réponses Photo recently published an issue with a cover that really makes you wonder. It’s a portrait image shot in the evening, or should I say – it was made to look that way?
While this isn’t the first AI-generated magazine cover, it’s definitely the first one that makes you wonder – will AI actually replace photographers in the future? Should we be worried?
I stumbled upon this story on Creative Bloq, and the author compared the latest and the previous Réponses Photo’s magazine covers. He asked if we could tell which photo was AI-generated, and I got the answer wrong. Before we move on, can you tell which is which?
The March 2023 issue of Réponses Photo is dedicated to night photography and artificial intelligence. In that spirit, the magazine cover combines both. “This photo is not a photo,” the description of the image reads. Other than night photography, the magazine discusses the similarities and differences between photos and AI-generated imagery.
The magazine reflects on this “fascinating and worrying trend,” and that’s probably the best description of AI images that I’ve read so far. Because to be honest, this was the first time I actually thought that AI could replace photographers in the future, at least to some extent. And it made me equally concerned and fascinated. Do you think we have a reason to worry?
