We knew it wouldn’t be long before Amazon jumped onto the generative AI bandwagon. But here they are, just announcing their new text-to-image generator, amongst other AI-related things.
Amazon Web Services launched their new AI model, Titan, at the re:Invent conference this week. Just like every other image generator out there, it can create images from text or change an existing image using in-painting, out-painting, and background-altering techniques.
The World Press Photo Contest has revised its entry guidelines to clarify what makes a real photograph. Photojournalists complained just days after the contest announced that AI-generated images could be submitted to the Open Format competition category.
Photographers argued that allowing AI images in a contest focused on documenting real-world events contradicted their core principles.
Stability.AI have released the first version of their new generative video software, imaginatively called Stability Video Diffusion. The new program will let you create a video from one still image.
At the moment, it’s only available as a research preview. However, that is likely to change in the near future. There are two image-to-video models capable of generating 14 and 25 frames at different frame rates between 3 and 30 frames per second.
Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson is taking legal action against an AI app that used her name and image in an online ad without her permission. The ad, posted on Twitter by an AI app called “Lisa AI: 90’s Yearbook & Avatar,” featured a deepfake video of Johansson.
Johansson’s lawyer, Kevin Yorn, confirmed that she isn’t connected to the app and is pursuing legal proceedings. The ad, which was discovered on October 28, seems to have been removed from the internet since.
After welcoming AI images and launching its own AI image generator, Shutterstock has now announced new AI-powered editing features. From now on, you can edit photos directly in its library, transforming any stock image you find into exactly the image you need. Or at least that was the original idea, because the execution is far from perfect.
Any e-commerce and low-end product photographers out there may want to start thinking about diversifying. Amazon has released a beta version of a tool that replaces boring white backgrounds with more interesting scenes. And, of course, it’s all done with generative AI.
Amazon says that they have released the tool in a bid to move away from uninspiring white backgrounds or bad Photoshop. It promises that the new feature requires no skills. Great news for small businesses, perhaps, less good for the average jobbing product photographer.
Scientists have developed a way for photographers and artists to fight back against AI harvesting their work without permission. The tool, dubbed Nightshade, works by effectively poisoning the image’s pixels. In bulk, this can leave the AI model completely useless.
University of Chicago professor Ben Zhao told MIT Technology Review that Nightshade would poison any model that uses images to train AI. This poisoned data can then damage any future images created by the AI generator, causing it to “break in chaotic and unpredictable ways.

We all knew it was only a matter of time before Adobe started implementing its Firefly-powered generative fill-type features in its video products. I have to admit, I didn’t think it’d be quite so little time, but it looks like it’s coming soon.
At Adobe MAX, Adobe is showing off a sneak peek of some new features coming to Creative Cloud. Amongst them is “Project Fast Fill”, which brings Firefly generative AI features to Premiere Pro.
It doesn’t seem so long ago that Getty was getting all in a flap and suing Stable Diffusion AI for its unauthorised use of their images. Well, as they say: if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. Getty has just announced that it too, will be offering the option of AI-generated images.
